COVID-19 wreaked havoc across the sporting calendar and few organisations felt the full force of the disruption more than the A-League. All seems well now however and with 12 teams raring to go, it promises to be a fascinating campaign. Sydney FC are once again the team to beat with the likes of Melbourne City, Wellington Phoenix and Perth Glory all sure to be in hot pursuit. Macarthur are the newest franchise in the division, and they will be looking to prove their worth from the outset.

A-League Season Predictions

2020-21 A-League Premiers

BEST BET – Sydney FC $4 – Bet @ Sportsbet

With back to back titles in the bag, winning has become a habit for Sydney FC. In picking up their 6th championship last year, Sydney showed a real resolve under Steve Corica and look to be capable of building on that this year. The absence of Adam le Fondre is sure to hit them hard this season, but they have plenty of A-League experience and quality within their ranks and will once again be the team to beat.

NEXT BEST – Melbourne City $4.75 – Bet @ Sportsbet

It has long been the ambition of the City Football Group to propel Melbourne City to the upper echelons of A-League football and it appears that this could well be their year. Having finished second last season, they have plenty to build on and with former Socceroo Patrick Kisnorbo at the helm, they look to be going places. Craig Noone is the headline act in a team filled with superstars and they will be looking to pressurise Sydney FC from the off here.

OUTSIDE PICKS

Western United – $8 – Bet @ Sportsbet

Mark Rudan oversaw an excellent first season at Western United last term and it appears they have plenty to build on in 2021. New franchises have historically struggled to make an impact in the early days but United settled quickly and have infinite resources to take them to the next level. Alessandro Diamanti and Besart Berisha are two of the most dangerous players in the league and if they get it right, they can terrorise any opposition and they could be a dark horse in the title race this term.

Perth Glory – $11 – Bet @ Sportsbet

2019 league leaders shield winners Perth Glory look to be ready to challenge again in 2021. Last season was a mixed campaign for Glory, who struggled to generate any sort of consistency and the impact of COVID 19 saw their squad decimated. Cristian Ola is the man in the hotseat for Perth this season and whilst he doesn’t have a big squad at his disposal, he has plenty of quality in the ranks. Bruno Fornaroli is prolific in A-League football and if he can stay fit and firing, Glory will feel they have an outside chance.

2020-21 A-League Golden Boot Winner

BEST BET – Jamie Maclaren – Melbourne City $4 – Bet @ Sportsbet

Socceroo Jamie Maclaren banged the goals in for Melbourne City last season and few would bet against him doing so again. With 34 goals in 39 appearances in all competitions for City, he finally looks to have settled at a club and at the age of 27 – he is at the peak of his physical powers.

NEXT BEST – Bruno Fornaroli – Perth Glory $8.5 – Bet @ Sportsbet

Despite now being 33, Bruno Fornaroli is one of the most feared strikers in A-League football and Perth Glory will be looking to get the most out of him from the off this season. The Uruguayan took his time to get going last year but with a full pre-season under his belt, could be one to keep an eye on.

OUTSIDE PICKS

Besart Berisha – Western United $10 – Bet @ Sportsbet

Kosovan striker Besart Berisha has been putting in stellar performances in the A-League for the best part of a decade and at the age of 35, he appears to be showing no signs of slowing down. Western United look to have assembled a strong squad this term and with Berisha the focal point, he could bang the goals in this term.

Marco Rojas – Melbourne victory $19 – Bet @ Sportsbet

Kiwi winger Marco Rojas made a triumphant return to A-League football at the start of 2020 and few would bet against him continuing his excellent form. With experience all over Europe, Rojas is now plying his trade closer to home and at the age of 29, could be primed to set the league alight.

To Finish Bottom of the A-League Ladder

With 12 teams now in the division and many of the top sides strengthening over the off-season, avoiding finishing bottom of the table will be a priority for many of the other A-League sides:-

Central Coast Mariners $3.25 – Bet @ Sportsbet

Last year’s bottom side Central Coast Mariners really toiled all campaign without getting any serious rewards. Alen Stajcic is the man at the helm and he made some clear improvements last term with very little to show for it and they are once again the favourites to pick up the wooden spoon.

Newcastle Jets $4.5 – Bet @ Sportsbet

Carl Robinson looks to have a serious job on his hands at the Newcastle Jets and the Welshman will be keen to see his side avoid slipping into wooden spoon territory. Points were hard to come by for the majority of last season and with not too many match-winners in their ranks, it could be a long season ahead for the Jets.
