A-League soccer is back on the agenda following the customary winter break and the usual smattering of teams will be keen to pursue glory once again this season. Sydney FC timed their run to perfection last season to pick up the title and they will be eager to fend off the likes of Perth Glory, Adelaide United and both Melbourne sides this year. The introduction of Western United adds an intriguing element to proceedings this year with 11 teams now in the league shake up.
Here are some of our A-League pre-season predictions:
2019/20 A-League Season Preview
2019/20 A-League Premiers
BEST BET – Sydney FC @ $5 – Bet Now
It promises to be a fascinating season at Sydney FC following their championship win last term. They bounced back well from the disappointment of the previous campaign to pick up an unexpected Grand Final win over Perth Glory and they have the look of a side well placed to go again this season. Alex Brosque and Siem de Jong will take some replacing in their starting XI but with Adam le Fondre’s goal threat and the signing of Luke Brattan, they are sure to be in contention to pick up their 5th A League title this term.
NEXT BEST – Perth Glory @ $5.5 – Bet Now
Following a remarkable season that saw them win the Championship by 9 points, Perth Glory suffered an agonising defeat in the Grand Final and will be eager to bounce back this term. Tony Popovic’s side have an all-action approach on the field that perhaps saw them burn out a bit last season and they will want to be more savvy this term when it comes to picking up the silverware. Bruno Fornaroli needs no introduction to A-League fans and his signing from Melbourne City could be the difference for Glory this season.
Melbourne Victory @ $6 – Bet Now
It seems like a new beginning at Melbourne Victory as they look to get over their play-off humiliation this season under new manager Marco Kurz. The Kevin Muscat era was a successful one for the club but they have moved on and look well set to challenge once again this season. Ola Toivonen developed into a key player for Victory as they season went on last year and with Robbie Kruse and Jakob Poulsen just two of many European imports brought in this term, they could run the likes of Sydney and Perth close this year.
Melbourne City @ $7 – Bet Now
The wait for glory at Melbourne City continued last term with a fragmented season ending in Warren Joyce losing his job as head coach. Erick Mombaerts has been named as his replacement and the Frenchman has got rid of some key names as he looks to stamp his mark on the squad. Craig Noone has joined the club in what looks to be a good move for both club and player whilst the likes of Florin Berenguer and Josh Brilliante could be integral to their success this season.
2019/20 A-League Golden Boot Winner
BEST BET – Adam Le Fondre (Sydney FC) @ $7 – Bet Now
Sydney FC frontman Adam Le Fondre took the A-League by storm last season, not just with his amount of goals but the importance of them. The Englishman is a proven goal scorer wherever he has played and he will be keen to propel Sydney FC to glory once again this season.
NEXT BEST – Bruno Fornaroli – (Perth Glory) @ $8 – Bet Now
Bruno Fornaroli is absolutely prolific at this level having bagged goals religiously for Melbourne City. The Uruguayan has missed much of the last seasons due to a broken ankle and with a refreshed body and change of scenery; he could rekindle his old form this term.
Ola Toivonen (Melbourne Victory) @ $9 – Bet Now
Despite not plying his trade as an out and out striker historically, Swedish international Ola Toivonen grew into the role at Melbourne Victory last season and could go well again this term. A change of manaher could see a transitional period on the horizon at Victory but he is a proven performer and looks a good value bet here.
Adam Taggart (Brisbane Roar) @ $11 – Bet Now
Few players have had the consistency in terms of goal scoring that Adam Taggart has in recent A-League seasons. He was often the difference for Brisbane Roar last season and with Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler now in charge, goals look pretty much guaranteed for Brisbane this term.
2019/20 A-League Wooden Spoon
With 11 teams now in the division and many of the top sides strengthening over the off-season, avoiding finishing bottom of the table will be a priority for many of the other A-League sides:
Wellington Pheonix @ $1.65 – Bet Now
Mark Rudan did wonders for Wellington Pheonix last season finishing 6th but their side has been decimated with Rudan himself, Roy Krishna, Andrew Durante and Sarpreet Singh just some of the big names to have departed. They could be in for a long season.
Central Coast Mariners @ $3.65 – Bet Now
Last year’s bottom side Central Coast Mariners really toiled all campaign and have installed Alen Stajcic as their new coach. Their defensive frailties left them exposed consistently last season and they could be in for a real basement scrap this year.
Adelaide United @ $13 – Bet Now
Following an excellent campaign, Adelaide lost manager Marco Kurz to Melbourne Victory and have tasked Gertjan Verbeek with the managers’ job. They are a good side, packed with quality but the uncertainty over Verbeek is reflected in their odds here.
