The A-League returns for 2021-22, with the usual host of big names sides chasing glory down under. Melbourne City finally broke their A-League duck this year, reigning supreme in remarkable fashion, to clinch their first ever A-League title. The usual candidates of Sydney FC and Perth Glory are sure to be in the mix again this season, with last year’s new boys Macarthur FC also having recruited shrewdly in the off-season. With 12 teams raring to go and fans set to return to stadia in the not too distant future, it promises to be a fascinating campaign.
Here are some of our A-League season predictions:
A-League Season Predictions
2021-22 A-League Premiers
BEST BET – Melbourne City @ $4.33 – Bet @ Sportsbet
It has long been the ambition of the City Football Group to propel Melbourne City to the upper echelons of A-League football and last year they finally fulfilled their objective. City had way too much about them for the whole division last year and with former Socceroo Patrick Kisnorbo at the helm, they will certainly be setting the benchmark again this term. Jamie Maclaren is the headline act in a team filled with superstars and they will be looking to go back to back here in 2021/22.
NEXT BEST – Sydney FC @ $5 – Bet @ Sportsbet
A slow start was ultimately the undoing of Sydney FC last season, as the blues failed to recover and catch Melbourne City in the league. The New South Wales outfit won the league championship in both 2019 and 2020 and they will be desperate to get their hands back on the trophy. Goals were a problem at times last season for the blues, but Bobo will be tasked with finding the net more regularly and if he does, the rest of the league could be in serious trouble.
BEST VALUE PICKS
Perth Glory @ $7 – Bet @ Sportsbet
Last season was a campaign to forget for 2019 league leaders shield winners Perth Glory, finishing 8th and way out of play-off contention. Change needed to come at HBF Park and winter acquisitions look to have had a huge impact on their outlook this season. Former Liverpool and England striker Daniel Sturridge is the headline act in the A-League this season and whilst he has had his fair share of injury problems, he could be hugely influential for Glory if he comes good this term.
Macarthur FC @ $8 – Bet @ Sportsbet
Having been the new boys in the A-League last season, there was very little expectation weighing heavy on Macarthur FC, but they surpassed pre-season predictions and finished in the play-off places. They ultimately came up short in their title bid in their maiden season, but they are a side with serious talent, combined with top level experience. Matt Derbyshire’s goals will be missed this term but in Craig Noone and Jordan Mutch, they have two men with plenty of high-level English football experience and they should be a good watch this term.
2021-22 A-League Golden Boot Winner
BEST BET – Daniel Sturridge (Perth Glory) @ $5.5 – Bet @ Sportsbet
At the age of 32, Daniel Sturridge has been blighted by injury problems throughout his career, but he will be looking forward to a fresh start in Australia. He has been a goal machine for both Liverpool and England during his career and his arrival in the league is a real coup.
NEXT BEST – Jamie Maclaren (Melbourne City) @ $6.5 – Bet @ Sportsbet
Socceroo Jamie Maclaren banged the goals in for Melbourne City last season and helped them to their maiden title. With 25 goals in just 23 appearances for City last term, he finally looks to have settled at a club and at the age of 28 – he is at the peak of his physical powers.
Bobo (Sydney FC) @ $10 – Bet @ Sportsbet
Brazilian forward Bobo failed to hit the heights many expected at Sydney FC last season, but he should be raring to go with a full pre-season under his belt this term. He still managed 12 goals, in a side that struggled for rhythm last term, and should he get going early, his goals could be crucial to Sydney FC this term.
Tomer Hemed (Western Sydney Wanderers) @ $12 – Bet @ Sportsbet
Israeli striker Tomer Hemed has a wealth of experience across Europe and beyond and his goals for WSW helped them finish 8th last season. He and the Wanderers will be hoping for a stronger season this term and if Hemed gets firing, they could well end up battling for a play-off spot come the end of the campaign.
2021-22 A-League to Finish Bottom
With 12 teams in the division and many of the top sides strengthening over the off-season, avoiding finishing bottom of the table will be a priority for many of the other A-League sides:-
Newcastle Jets @ $2.5 – Bet @ Sportsbet
It was a catastrophic campaign last time round for the Newcastle Jets, who finished 11th – only two points above wooden spoon side Melbourne Victory. Worryingly for the Jets, very few changes have been made in the off-season and they will have to improve dramatically to climb away from the bottom of the league this term.
Central Coast Mariners @ $3.5 – Bet @ Sportsbet
The Central Coast Mariners defied convention last year, completely pouring scorn over the pre-season pundits and ending up finishing in 3rd place. For a long period of the campaign, the Mariners were sat pretty at the top of the table but with a far more ‘normal’ outlook projected for the 2021/22 A-League season, they could well struggle again.
