As 2020 draws to a close, the A-League returns with 12 teams vying for glory in 2021. Macarthur are the newest outfit in the league and they along with many other sides will be looking to take the gong from Sydney FC. The Blues have lifted the A-League trophy for the past two seasons and will once again be the side to beat. Melbourne City look to have the credentials to finally break their A-League duck whilst Wellington Phoenix, Adelaide United and Western United are also sure to be in the mix in what should be an enthralling campaign.
Here are our picks for the next round of fixtures in the A-League:
A-League Round 2 Tips
Wellington Phoenix vs Sydney FC – Wollongong Showground
Wellington Phoenix ($3.6)
Sydney FC ($2.1)
Two sides that will be looking to make plenty of front running in the A-League this season get their campaigns underway as Wellington Phoenix take on Sydney FC. The Kiwi side were one of the surprise packages in the league last season and they will be desperate to prove that last year’s impressive showing wasn’t just a flash in the pan. Phoenix finished 3rd last season and with some seemingly shrewd off-season recruiting, they look to have the credentials to be a play-off side once again this year. Sydney FC meanwhile have enjoyed a mixed off-season and their poor showing in the Asian Champions League could be lingering around the club for a while. They are the defending A-League champions however and will be the side to catch once more. The absence of Adam le Fondre for the foreseeable could be a hindrance in the goal scoring department but the blues are a good side and should get off to a winning start here.
Betting tip:Sydney FC to win the match ($2.1) – Bet @ Sportsbet
Sydney FC to win 2-1
Melbourne Victory vs Brisbane Roar – AAMI Park
Melbourne Victory ($2.26)
Brisbane Roar ($3.2)
Melbourne Victory will be looking to show that last season was a mere blip as they play their first home game of the season against a Brisbane Roar side with aspirations this season. Victory have historically been one of the best A-League sides over the last decade, but their 10th place finish last term was poor by their standards. They have looked to make plenty of changes both on and off the field during the off-season and they could be a relative surprise package season. Brisbane Roar this term meanwhile will be looking to build on an impressive campaign last season but losing manager Robbie Fowler could be a transitional change that isn’t too easy. The oranges are a very good outfit and should have top 6 aspirations again this term, despite a relatively disrupted off-season. This could be a tight game between two well matched sides and a draw looks the most likely result.
Betting tip: The match to finish as a draw ($3.75) – Bet @ Sportsbet
Macarthur vs Central Coast Mariners – Campbelltown Sports Stadium
Central Coast Mariners ($5.5)
Two sides that will be looking to build on their good starts to the season face off as Macarthur take on Central Coast Mariners in their first home game as an A-League team. Macarthur have plenty to prove as the new boys in the division, but their opening day win at Western Sydney Warriors was a suggestion that they have the credentials to compete in the A-League this term. Central Coast meanwhile picked up an excellent win in their first game of the season against Newcastle Jets and they will be doing all they can to maintain momentum. As the perennial wooden spoon favourites, they are a side unfancied by many, but they could be an outside shot for the play-off picture this term. Both sides look well overpriced here and this could well turn out to be an entertaining draw.
Betting tip: The match to finish as a draw ($4.2) – Bet @ Sportsbet
Adelaide United vs Melbourne City – Hindmarsh Stadium
Adelaide United ($2.9)
Melbourne City ($2.5)
Melbourne City will be looking to build on their impressive opening day as they travel to Adelaide United. The hosts were on the periphery last season and despite having plenty of quality in their squad, they couldn’t quite mix it with the big boys when it mattered. Their opening day draw was a sign that they still have work to do this term but with plenty of quality in their side, they should be in the top 6 mix come the end of the season. Melbourne City meanwhile are fancied by many to challenge Sydney FC this season and their opening day win at Brisbane Roar demonstrated the defensive steel Patrick Kisnorbo has been brought in to deliver. City should have too much quality in key areas here and look overpriced to win this one.
Betting tip: Melbourne City to win the match ($2.5) – Bet @ Sportsbet
Melbourne City to win 2-1
