2019/20 A-League Round 2 Preview

Melbourne Victory vs Western Sydney Wanderers – Marvel Stadium

Melbourne Victory ($1.89)

Western Sydney Wanderers ($4.2)

Draw ($3.88)

Melbourne Victory will be looking to get their first win of the season as they welcome Western Sydney Wanderers to the Marvel Stadium. It’s all change at Victory who start a new era following Kevin Muscat’s successful reign at the club as Marco Kurz steps into the hot seat following an esteemed spell in charge of Adelaide United. They struggled for rhythm against Melbourne City last time out and they will be looking to find form quickly here. WSW meanwhile had no such problems in their opening encounter, beating Central Coast Mariners 2-1 and Markus Babbel looks set for a successful season this time around. WSW struggled at times last year but look to be a side with a plan this term and they could nick something on the road at Melbourne Victory here.

1-1 Draw

Western United vs Perth Glory – GMHBA

Western United ($2.9)

Perth Glory ($2.45)

Draw ($3.54)

Last season’s league champions Perth Glory will be looking to bounce back from last gasp heartbreak last time out as they travel to Western United. A-League new boys Western United created history on game week 1 with their win at Wellington Phoenix and it will be another historic day for the club as they play their first home game. They impressed last time out and with the likes of Alessandro Diamanti in their ranks, they should go well this term. Perth Glory dominated the league season last year under Tony Popovic, winning the League Championship by 9 points before coming up short against Sydney FC in the Grand Final. They have strengthened in the off season and look to be one of the favourites for the title again this term but will need to bounce back from a disappointing home draw to Brisbane Roar last time out. The atmosphere at the GMHBA should be electric but Perth are a good side and they should come through this test.

Betting tip: Perth Glory to win the match ($2.45)

Perth Glory to win 2-1

Central Coast Mariners vs Newcastle Jets – Central Coast Stadium

Central Coast Mariners ($4)

Newcastle Jets ($2.06)

Draw ($3.76)

Newcastle Jets play their first game of the campaign as they travel to last year’s bottom side Central Coast Mariners. The Mariners have endured a tough few seasons in the league and are looking for inspiration from new head coach Alen Stajcic. Defensively they have struggled in recent seasons and they will be hoping a change of manager can bring about a change in fortunes. They dug deep against WSW last time out in a 2-1 defeat and they will be hoping to get going in front of their home fans here. Newcastle Jets meanwhile have endured another summer of change but they look well set to make an assault on the play-offs this term. With the likes of Wes Hoolahan in their ranks, they have plenty of top level experience and they should mount a sustained challenge this term. This should be a game that Newcastle Jets should win if they play to their full potential.

Newcastle Jets to win 3-1

Melbourne City vs Adelaide United – AAMI Park

Melbourne City ($2.2)

Adelaide United ($3.5)

Draw ($3.5)

Melbourne City play their first home game of the season as they welcome Adelaide United to town. The blues have made a solid start since Erick Mombaerts was installed as the man to replace a rather unsuccessful spell for the club under Warren Joyce. City haven’t thrown as much money at their quest for glory as they have done in previous years but they looked to have picked up an excellent player in the form of Craig Noone. They made all the running in the Melbourne Derby but only managed a draw last time out. For Adelaide this will be a real test as they look to bounce back from their defeat to Sydney FC last week. Gertjan Verbeek is the new man in charge at Adelaide and he has big shoes to fill in the form of Marco Kurz. United looked to have plenty of fire power in their ranks and troubled Sydney and they will be eager to push for the play-offs once again this season. This should be the stand out game of the weekend and Melbourne City could well nick it in front of their home fans.

Betting tip: Melbourne City to win the match and both teams to score ($3.4) Bet Now

Melbourne City to win 2-1

Sydney FC vs Wellington Phoenix – Leichhardt Oval

Sydney FC ($1.47)

Wellington Phoenix ($8)

Draw ($4.75)

Sydney FC will be looking to maintain their winning start to the season as they welcome Wellington Phoenix to town on Sunday. The Blues picked up a hard fought win at Adelaide United last time out and with his two goals last week, Adam Le Fondre will once again be their main man this term and they look well set to go all the way once more. Wooden spoon favourites Wellington Phoenix have had their squad decimated through players moving to other clubs but put up a good fight in defeat to Western United last weekend. Phoenix finished 6th in the league last year and have tasked Ufuk Talay with replicating that this term, despite the significant squad losses. Wellington will make this difficult for Sydney but the blues should be way too strong at home here.
