Game week 21 threw up plenty of thrills and spills in the A-League as Sydney FC succumbed to only their 2nd defeat of the season to WSW. Newcastle Jets picked up a remarkable win over Perth Glory whilst Melbourne Victory stopped the rot at home to Adelaide United. Western United showed their early season form as they hammered Central Coast Mariners while Brisbane Roar’s impressive unbeaten run came to an end at the hands of Melbourne City.
Here are our picks for the 22nd round of fixtures in the A-League:
2019/20 A-League Round 22 Preview
Brisbane Roar vs Western Sydney Wanderers – Suncorp Stadium
Brisbane Roar ($2.5)
Two sides with genuine play-off aspirations face off at the Suncorp Stadium as Brisbane Roar host WSW. Robbie Fowler’s Roar have climbed up to 6th in the A-League table with four wins from their last 7 league fixtures and they will have been disappointed to come away with nothing from Melbourne City last weekend. They will need to bounce back here and keep the likes of WSW at bay as they only have a 2-point gap between themselves and the play-off chasing pack. For WSW meanwhile confidence is flowing following back to back wins over Adelaide United and then a real smash and grab at local rivals Sydney FC last time out. The Wanderers sit 7th in the table and they will know that a win here boosts their play-off hopes significantly. This should be an excellent game, between two sides in good nick and a score draw looks to be the most likely result.
Betting tip: The match to finish as a draw ($3.6)
Adelaide United vs Western United – Hindmarsh Stadium
Adelaide United ($1.66)
Western United ($4.75)
A classic play-off six pointer looks on the cards at the Hindmarsh Stadium as Adelaide United welcome Western United to town. Adelaide have suffered back to back defeats to Melbourne Victory and WSW and they will be hoping a return to familiar surroundings will help them here. Normally a side known for their defensive prowess, United have conceded 7 goals in their last 2 games, slipping down to 5th in the table as a result and the gap between themselves and the play-off chasing sides is only 3 points. Western United are one of those play-off chasing sides and they snapped their poor run with a 6-2 hammering of Central Coast Mariners last time out. They sit 8th in the table, but in striking distance of the sides above them and they will see this as a real free hit in their first season in the A-League. This should be a very open game and Adelaide should just about prevail in front of their home fans.
Betting tip: Adelaide United to win the match ($1.66) Bet Now
Adelaide United to win 2-1
Melbourne Victory vs Sydney FC – Marvel Stadium
Melbourne Victory ($3.1)
Sydney FC ($2.4)
League shield chasing Sydney FC will be keen to get back to winning ways as they travel to old foes Melbourne Victory. For Victory, this season has been a huge disappointment. They had realistic hopes of finishing well inside the top 4 at the start of the campaign but they find themselves 9th and with a 6-point gap to overturn if they are to make it into the play-offs come the end of the season. They did however pick up an excellent win over Adelaide United last time out and they will be hoping that could be the catalyst for a strong finish to the season. Sydney FC look to have the title wrapped up already, with a 10-point lead to the chasing pack and games in hand on the teams below them. The manner of their defeat to cross-city rivals WSW will be particularly frustrating though and they will be out to prove a point here. They are sure to be focusing their attention towards the impending play-offs, so squad rotation looks assured, but they will be eager to keep wins coming in, especially against one of their oldest rivals. Melbourne Victory will make this tough for Sydney, but the blues are the best side in the league, and they should win this one.
Betting tip: Sydney FC to win the match ($2.4) Bet Now
Sydney FC to win 2-0
Central Coast Mariners vs Wellington Phoenix – Central Coast Stadium
Central Coast Mariners ($3.75)
Wellington Phoenix ($2)
Wooden spoon threatened Central Coast Mariners welcome Wellington Phoenix to the Central Coast Stadium. Seven consecutive defeats have left the Mariners bottom of the table following and their crunching 6-2 loss on the road at Western United was particularly tough to watch. They have been fighting hard throughout the campaign however and their best results do tend to come at home and a win here could see them pull away from wooden spoon contention this term. Wellington Phoenix enjoyed a rest week last time out and with teams around them slipping up, they will see this as a real opportunity. They sit 4th in the table and if results go their way, they could climb as high as 2nd by the end of the weekend. Central Coast will be keen to show a response here, but Wellington Phoenix are a strong outfit and they should pick up a comfortable win here.
Betting tip: Wellington Phoenix to win the match ($2) Bet Now
Wellington Phoenix to win 3-0
Perth Glory vs Melbourne City – nib Stadium
Perth Glory ($2.25)
Melbourne City ($3.4)
3rd takes on 2nd in the headline fixture of the A-League this weekend as Melbourne City travel to Perth Glory. The hosts will be keen to bounce back from a humbling defeat at Newcastle Jets last time out – a result that means they have only won one of their last 5 games. They sit 3rd in the table, three points behind this weekend’s opponents Melbourne City and they will be hoping to make up ground at home here. Melbourne City meanwhile will be looking to build on last weekend’s hard-fought win over Brisbane Roar. That result saw City leapfrog Perth Glory in the table and climb to 2nd, although they have played a game more. This should be the standout tie of the weekend with both sides desperate to pick up points in their respective play-off pushes. With very little to pick between them, a draw looks very much on the cards here.
Betting tip: The match to finish as a draw and both teams to score ($4.55) Bet Now
