The A-League season is well and truly underway once more and there is a shock leader at the top of the pack as perennial wooden spoon winners Central Coast Mariners find themselves sitting pretty on top of the league. Adelaide United and Brisbane Roar lead the teams in hot pursuit of the Mariners and following their impressive wins last time out, both sides will be fancying their chances this term. Defending champions Sydney FC got off to a flying start with a win at Wellington Phoenix whilst the likes of Melbourne Victory and the Newcastle Jets look to have a long campaign ahead of them.
Here are our picks for the next round of fixtures in the A-League:
A-League Round 3 Tips
Newcastle Jets vs Western Sydney Warriors – McDonald Jones Stadium
Newcastle Jets ($3)
Western Sydney Wanderers ($2.5)
Two sides that will be looking to bounce back from opening day defeats face off as the Newcastle Jets welcome the Western Sydney Wanderers. The Jets endured a tough year last season and their defeat to Central Coast Mariners on the opening day was a sign that there is still plenty of work to be done at the McDonald Jones Stadium. Craig Deans will be desperate to see an improvement against a WSW side that seem to lack consistency. Their opening day defeat at home to A-League new boys Macarthur was particularly chastening and Carl Robinson will be hoping to get his teeth into his side over the next few games and show his worth. This could be a tight game between two sides desperate not to lose and a draw looks the most likely result.
Betting tip:The match to finish as a draw ($3.5) – Bet @ Sportsbet
Macarthur vs Wellington Phoenix – Campbelltown Sports Stadium
Wellington Phoenix ($3)
A-League new boys Macarthur will be looking to bounce back from their first league defeat as they host Wellington Phoenix. Initial optimism was short lived in the Macarthur camp as they followed up an opening day win over WSW with a painstaking home defeat to the unfancied Central Coast Mariners. They will see that game as a learning curve and could come into this one refreshed against a potentially dangerous Wellington Phoenix side. The visitors were just edged out by defending champions Sydney FC on the opening day and could well spring a few surprises this season. Not being able to play their home games in New Zealand could hinder them but they are an experienced A-League outfit, and they should be challenging for a top 6 finish come the end of the season. Wellington Phoenix look way overpriced here and they should pick up a comfortable win on the road in this one.
Betting tip: Wellington Phoenix to win the match ($3) – Bet @ Sportsbet
Wellington Phoenix to win 2-0
Brisbane Roar vs Melbourne Victory – Dolphin Oval
Brisbane Roar ($2.3)
Melbourne Victory ($3.2)
In a repeat of last week’s encounter, Brisbane Roar once again take on Melbourne Victory as the A-League looks to make the calendar as COVID friendly and secure as possible. The Roar were comfortable 3-1 winners at Melbourne Victory last weekend and look to have carried over their form from last season. They have a side packed with goals and whilst defensively there is still work to be done, they look to be a side more than capable of challenging for the play-offs and beyond this term. For Melbourne Victory meanwhile this will be an instant chance to get revenge and they will want a response. Victory were second best for much of the clash between the two sides last weekend and they look to have a job on their hands to fend off talk of another basement battle this season. Having played each other last week, this could be a fiery encounter and Brisbane Roar should pick up yet another impressive win over Melbourne Victory here.
Betting tip:Brisbane Roar to win the match ($2.3) – Bet @ Sportsbet
Brisbane Roar to win 2-1
