Week 3 of the A-League promises to be yet another fascinating one as Melbourne City and Sydney FC face off in an early season, heavyweight clash.
Last season’s champions Melbourne Victory find themselves bottom of the pile following back to back defeats and results will need to improve for Kevin Muscat’s men as they travel to fellow under-performers Newcastle Jets. Meanwhile, high-flying Perth Glory welcome Brisbane Roar as the season begins to heat up.
Here are our picks for the third round of fixtures in the A-League:
6:50pm Melbourne City vs Sydney FC – AAMI Park
Melbourne City ($2.6)
Sydney FC ($2.8)
Two unbeaten sides face off at AAMI Park as Melbourne City welcome Sydney FC to the Victorian capital. City are unbeaten this season, picking up an impressive win on the road at Melbourne Victory on the opening day before drawing with Central Coast Mariners last time out and they will be looking to make use of home advantage for the first time this season here. Sydney FC are also unbeaten under new boss Steve Corica and impressed in their 2-0 win over cross city rivals WSW last time out. The emergence of Adam le Fondre looks to be a real positive for Sydney who look well set to defend their league title this season. This should be the highlight match of the weekend between two attacking teams and the points could well be shared.

4:35pm Wellington Phoenix vs Western Sydney Warriors – Wellington Regional Stadium
Wellington Phoenix ($2.64)
Western Sydney Warriors ($2.7)
Early season surprise package Wellington Phoenix will be looking to maintain their unbeaten start to the campaign as they welcome struggling Western Sydney Warriors to the Regional Stadium. The Phoenix showed real resilience to pick up a point on the road at Brisbane Roar last time out and Mark Rudan’s men look to have enough about them to compete for play-off places come the end of the season. Marcus Babbel’s Warriors suffered VAR controversy at the hands of local rivals Sydney FC last time out and will be keen to bounce back quickly here. They currently sit 9th in the table, with only 1 point from their opening 2 games but have plenty of time on their hands to turn things around. This could be a fascinating encounter in Wellington and the Phoenix look full of confidence currently and could pick up yet another result here.
Betting tip: Wellington Phoenix to win the match ($2.64) – BET NOW
Wellington Phoenix to win 2-1
6:50pm Newcastle Jets vs Melbourne Victory – Hunter Stadium
Newcastle Jets ($2.75)
Melbourne Victory ($2.52)
Two sides looking for improved performances face off at the Hunter Stadium as table-propping Melbourne Victory travel to winless Newcastle Jets. The Jets currently sit 8th in the table, with 1 point from their opening 2 games – a tally they will be very keen to improve upon quickly after finishing 2nd last season. They may deem themselves a little unlucky in both of their games so far and with key men returning from injury, could start firing up the league soon. Victory have endured a heartbreaking start to the season, losing to local rivals Melbourne City on the opening day before ending on the wrong-side of a 5 goal thriller at the hands of Perth Glory last time out. Kevin Muscat will be keen to see an improvement from his side but has spoken of his admiration for both of the performances his players have put in so far this season, despite not getting the results. With both sides brimming with quality from their squads, it could be an excellent game that ends up honours even.
Betting tip: The match to finish as a draw ($3.5) – BET NOW
9:00pm Perth Glory vs Brisbane Roar – NIB Stadium
Perth Glory ($2.02)
Brisbane Roar ($3.66)
High-flying Perth Glory will be heading home full of confidence following their remarkable 3-2 win on the road at Melbourne Victory last time out as they welcome Brisbane to the NIB. Tony Popovic will be hoping to keep his sides’ strong start going as Glory currently sit 4th in the table, level on points with leaders Sydney FC. Attack appears to prioritise defence in the Glory strategy this season and is should be an exciting season for all Perth supporters this term. Once again goals look to be the key issue for Brisbane Roar who have found creativity a real struggle in recent seasons. Key summer signing Adam Taggart opened his on debut against Central Coast and whilst there were glimpses of positive play against Wellington, the cutting edge was still missing when it mattered. Brisbane are notoriously difficult to break down and this could be an attritional battle that Perth, buoyed by their result at Melbourne last time out – should just about come through.
Betting tip: Perth Glory to win the match ($2.02) – BET NOW
Perth Glory to win 1-0
4:00pm Central Coast Mariners vs Adelaide United – Central Coast Stadium
Central Coast Mariners ($3.5)
Adelaide United ($2.12)
Two more unbeaten sides face off on Sunday as Adelaide travel to Central Coast in what looks to have the makings of a traditional mid-table scrap. The Mariners have put all of the Usain Bolt distractions to one side and impressed in their opening two draws with Brisbane and Melbourne City – with Ross McCormack looking to be a potent threat in any game he plays. Similarly, Adelaide have impressed this season – picking up home draws with Sydney FC and Newcastle Jets before their impressive win in the FFA Cup in midweek (again over Sydney FC) with Craig Goodwin proving to be the match winner with an impressive brace for Marco Kurz’s men. Central Coast will be keen to show just how far they have come this season but Adelaide are riding the crest of a wave at the moment and should get the job done on their travels here.
Betting tip: Adelaide United to win the match and both teams to score ($4.1) – BET NOW
Adelaide United to win 2-1
