A Brief History of XcelBet

XcelBet is the latest online venture of Dave Dwyer, a legendary on-course bookmaker in the Sydney area. He previously ran the DaveBet website from 2022 until February 2025, when the site closed due to issues with the platform provider.

However, in March 2026, Dwyer returned to the online betting scene with XcelBet.com.au, a brand new betting site built on the Punterstech software.

Is XcelBet a Trustworthy Betting Site?

Dwyer is certainly a trustworthy operator. He’s well-known around the country’s racetracks and has a good reputation in the betting ring. The closure of his last online operation wasn’t his fault – the platform provider chose not to work in Australia any more. 

As for XcelBet, the site is licensed by Liquor and Gaming NSW, and its operations are governed by South Australia’s Gambling Codes of Practice. It’s secured by the latest encryption protocols and a variety of player protection tools are available, including deposit limits and self-exclusion.

Dave Dwyer is a member of the NSW Bookmakers’ Co-operative. That organisation vows to make good on the bets of its members, should they run into financial difficulties. 

XcelBet Online Betting Platform Review

As we mentioned, XcelBet is a Punterstech site. This experienced provider’s software is definitely easy to use, which is why so many other bookies chose to use it. 

However, it does mean that XcelBet looks pretty much identical to dozens of other betting sites, such as BearBet, BetBunker and Star Sports Australia. It also makes it difficult for bookies to innovate, as they’re beholden to their platform provider. So don’t expect cool features like cashout or esports betting.

Racing Focus

Instead, XcelBet takes a more traditional approach, focusing mostly on thoroughbred, harness and greyhound racing. As you’d expect, the domestic coverage is excellent – but so is the international racing product. 

All the usual bet types are offered, including Quinella, Exacta, Trifecta and Quaddies. You can also build Same Race Multis.

Competitive Sports Betting Odds

Alongside the racing product, XcelBet covers more than a dozen sports. The market depth is reasonable, giving you all the betting opportunities you’d expect, plus a few more. But it’s nowhere near as comprehensive as the biggest bookmakers, like Ladbrokes, TAB or bet365.

The odds are surprisingly competitive. XcelBet rarely offers the best prices in any given market, yet they’re consistently towards the top end. Win lines for most sports are set at 106% – that’s the same margin used by Neds for NRL games and Unibet for AFL.

One-off Prices

However, from time to time, you’ll find the odd footy win line priced closer to 104%. That’s far better than every Aussie betting site – they rarely go lower than 105%. 

We haven’t spotted a pattern to this, though. Perhaps it’s a promo that’s not clearly advertised, but it might just be pricing errors by the odds compilers.

Withdrawals are fairly quick. XcelBet processes payout requests twice a day, every day – including weekends. They use Osko, so the money should hit your account within seconds of being released.

However, the payout cut-off times are 7am and 6pm, so you’re not really likely to get the money instantly. But you’ll rarely wait more than 12 hours, which is still fast compared to other bookies down under.

Is There a XcelBet Mobile App?

There is an XcelBet sports betting app for Apple devices. It’s currently rated 3.5 out of 5 in the App Store. But it’s also quite new, so that score comes from just 13 reviews. 

Several comments refer to the app’s usability, and how it’s “easy to navigate”. That certainly tallies with our experience.

According to the XcelBet website, there’s also an Android app, but we couldn’t find it on Google Play. Maybe this was just a temporary issue – the homepage clearly features a link to both the App Store and Google Play. It seems unlikely they’d do that by mistake.

XcelBet does have a loyalty program, though, so perhaps this is where the better promotions for existing customers really kick in. As the site is still so new, we haven’t used it for long enough to benefit from the rewards system. However, we’ve heard it’s very good.

Customer Support at XcelBet 

With no telephone number, you’re limited to email (support@xcelbet.com.au) and live chat. The latter is obviously the quickest way to get assistance during the day, as email replies can take several hours. However, it’s only operational from 7am to midnight Sydney time.

That said, live support for 17 hours a day is pretty good. You only really see the big international sites like bet365 offering 24/7 chat. You’re lucky if you get 12 hours coverage from most Aussie-based bookies.

We’ve only contacted XcelBet support a couple of times, but they always respond instantly on live chat. There’s no irritating AI nonsense – a human will pick up your query in a matter of seconds.

Dave Dwyer’s latest online venture looks like every other Punterstech site. Market depth is reasonable, across an average number and selection of sports. Although the odds are surprisingly competitive, they’re not as good as the big boys. 

But that’s not really what this brand is about. XcelBet doesn’t even try to impress you with promos or gimmicks. It’s built on old-fashioned principles like taking a bet, good customer service and timely, reliable withdrawals. And in those areas, it more than delivers.
