Thursday College Basketball Picks

Butler Bulldogs vs. Providence Friars @ Alumni Hall

Butler didn’t get off to a great start this season, but they proved their worth against Providence in the first game of this series.

The 70-64 win got them back on track after dropping three of their first four games. It was a quality effort and now they have a chance to go back-to-back against the same team.

Going against them on Thursday is having to play away from home. Providence is tough to beat on home court and they even scored road wins over Seton Hall and TCU earlier this season.

Providence is coming off a double-overtime win over DePaul, which could either work for or against them. It’s never easy to find the energy following a double-overtime win, but they will have supreme confidence.

Turning around a six-point loss to Butler in their first meeting won’t be easy, but it is achievable for this Friars outfit. They are 6-3 on the season and that experience holds them in good stead for this game.

We suggest taking Providence to win in what should be a close game.

Virginia Cavaliers vs. Notre Dame Fighting Irish @ Purcell Pavillion

Virginia is one of the best college basketball teams in the country and the #23 ranked side is looking to rebound following a loss.

The Cavaliers lost 98-75 to the Gonzaga Bulldogs, who are the best team in the country. It was a tough loss, but expected for a side that hadn’t faced that level of opposition this season.

Virginia scored three consecutive wins before the loss, but they now face a Notre Dame team that is struggling for consistency and success.

The Fighting Irish hold a 3-4 record after beating Bellarmine 81-70. That followed consecutive losses to Duke and Purdue, where they were outclassed by better teams. Their best win to date came over Kentucky but this year’s Kentucky team is only a shadow of what they used to be.

Notre Dame has the ability to finish the season with a winning record, but beating teams like the Virginia Cavaliers is needed if they’re going to squeak into the tournament.

Most of the early betting support has come for Virginia and they are a tough defensive unit, but Notre Dame is a team that can score an upset.

Bookmakers will be giving Notre Dame points and they should be taken.

Mississippi State Bulldogs vs. Georgia Bulldogs @ Stegeman Coliseum

Georgia is riding a seven-game winning streak and we think they deserve to be ranked. A win over the Bulldogs could cement a top 25 position, but this Mississippi State team is no walkover.

They scored an 87-48 win over the Delta Devils and although beaten against Dayton, they took the Flyers to double-overtime in the 85-82 loss.

Georgia has been mostly beating teams in the weaker class, but the win over Cincinnati proved they can handle tough basketball teams.

The Bearcats were soundly beaten 83-68 and that was a quality win for the Bulldogs, who could improve to 8-0 on the season.

They average just over 81 points per game and give up 64.7. That is a better average than Mississippi State, which scores only 73 points per game.

We are expecting bookmakers to have Georgia as the firm favourites and the line should be around 6.5. Georgia is capable of covering the spread and producing their eighth consecutive win in fine fashion.

We recommend betting this line as soon as it’s released. Money typically comes strongly for Georgia, so lock in the early value while it’s available.
