Alabama Crimson Tide vs. Ohio State Buckeyes Game Preview
There was a lot of speculation when selectors put Ohio State in the College Football Playoffs, but they showed why they deserved the spot last Sunday.
The Buckeyes dismantled the Clemson Tigers, scoring a 49-28 victory in one of the most one-sided semifinals in history. They made future #1 draft pick Trevor Lawrence look average and that’s not easy to do.
Despite playing only seven games this season, it’s clear to everyone that Ohio State is one of the best teams in the country. They defeated three ranked teams in their last four games and QB Justin Fields is growing in confidence.
Like most Buckeye quarterbacks, Fields is enjoying the up-tempo style of play. He has thrown for 21 touchdowns, which is only 15 behind Mac Jones, who has played five more games.
Another strength of the Buckeyes is their running game, which has rushed for 272.6 yards per game. That is 90 yards more than Alabama per game, so expect a heavy dose of running attack from Ohio State.
Alabama enters the final at 12-0 after scoring a comfortable win over Notre Dame in their semifinal. The 31-14 win was a tough affair and it was made closer by a late Fighting Irish touchdown.
It was been a near-flawless season for the Crimson Tide in search of another title. Mac Jones has been dynamite with the ball, scoring 36 touchdowns and allowing just four interceptions.
They score 48.2 points per game and allow their opponents only 19.5, so their statistics read better than that of Ohio State. However, they have yet to face a team as dangerous as the Buckeyes.
It should be an intriguing battle between two high-powered offences and it could come down to which team turns up on the defensive side of the ball.
We give a slight edge to Alabama, but we are expecting a close game and punters could cash in with Ohio State with the points.
Alabama vs. Ohio State Betting Prediction
Bookmakers have installed Alabama as the $1.35 favourites in the head-to-head market, with Ohio State the outsiders at $3.12.
There isn’t much value in taking Alabama on the h2h line as this game could go either way. The Crimson Tide are unlikely to dominate the Buckeyes, so we’re looking at Ohio State with the points.
The current line is set at 7.5 points, which allows Ohio State to lose by a touchdown but still cover the spread for punters. This is important as the National Championship could be decided on the final play of the game, or even overtime.
Therefore, we are confident with Ohio State +7.5 ($1.83) and due to the solid money coming for the Buckeyes, that line could drop to +7 come game time.
For more value, we’re looking at the total match points market. The Over 74.5 points is one of the biggest lines in College history, so bookmakers are expecting a touchdown fest.
We are finding it hard to disagree and a 40-35 game is entirely possible with these two offences. The only problem would be if the defence for either team makes momentum-changing plays, but based on their history, it should be a high-scoring affair.
Take the Over 74.5 ($1.84) before the line changes too much over the course of the next week.
Another prop bet worth looking at is Justin Fields Over 290.5 yards passing. If the Buckeyes face a deficit early in the game, expect Fields to come out firing through the air.
He will need to have a big passing game to keep up with Mac Jones, who bookmakers have set at 365.5 yards passing. Fields wants to show he can gun sling it with the best of them, so look for the Buckeyes’ QB to have a field day through the air.
Bet: Ohio State +7.5 @ $1.83 – Bet @ Sportsbet
