It appears to be one-way traffic at the top of the Premier League table in 2020 as Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool sit an incredible 13 points clear of the chasing pack. Manchester City and Leicester kept pace with solid wins on New Year’s Day whilst Arsenal picked up their first win under the stewardship of Mikel Arteta with a convincing win over Manchester United. Elsewhere, Tottenham’s struggles continued with a defeat at Southampton whilst Watford’s survival bid continued to gather pace with an excellent home win over high-flying Wolves.
Here are our picks for the 22nd round of fixtures in the Premier League:
2019/20 EPL Week 22 Preview
Sheffield United vs West Ham United – Bramall Lane
Sheffield United ($1.92)
West Ham United ($4.5)
West Ham will be hoping to continue their resurgence under David Moyes as they head to high-flying Sheffield United on Friday night. The Blades meanwhile have been in fine form all season under Chris Wilder and they look to be assured of Premier League safety even at this early stage. With a unique style of play, they have been more than a match for every opponent they have come across this term Back to back defeats to Manchester City and Liverpool have seen them slip to 8th but it has still been a remarkable season for Sheffield United. The Hammers are in the midst of a relegation battle and only sit 2 points and 2 places above the relegation zone and they look set for a scrap in the second half of the season. Results have led the board to replace Manuel Pellegrini with David Moyes and the decision looks to have paid off with wins over Bournemouth and Gillingham (in the FA Cup) in the last week. This could be a far tighter encounter than people think and it could well end up honours even in South Yorkshire.
Betting tip: The match to finish as a draw and both teams to score ($4.55) – Bet Now
Crystal Palace vs Arsenal – Selhurst Park
Crystal Palace ($4.3)
A London Derby kicks off the Saturday Premier League programme as Arsenal travel across the capital to take on Crystal Palace. The Eagles find themselves sitting pretty in 9th following their excellent run of form, both home and away in the Premier League. They may have one eye on European football and need to start picking up results in games like this if they are to finish in the top half come May. The Gunners meanwhile are one point back in 10th in the table, with a mere 27 points to their name and they need to start picking up points fast if European football is to be on the agenda next season. They have looked a more organised outfit under Mikel Arteta in recent games and wins over Manchester United and Leeds in their two games will give all around the club a huge boost. This looks a very evenly matched game on paper and it could well finish as a draw.
Betting tip: The match to finish as a draw ($3.9) – Bet Now
Chelsea vs Burnley – Stamford Bridge
Chelsea will be hoping to continue to distance themselves from the chasing pack in pursuit of top 4 football as they host Burnley. The Blues have been in decent form all season but their disappointing draw with Brighton last time out in the Premier League will be a hammer blow for Frank Lampard’s men. Their home form has been a worry of late too and they will be desperate to get back to winning ways quickly here. The Clarets have been faring well in the Premier League this season but find themselves in 15th position in the table, only 4 points above the drop zone. They have seen their progress stall dramatically in recent weeks with three consecutive league defeats and they will be eager to dig in and show resilience here. Chelsea however should have too much for the Clarets in front of home support on Saturday.
Betting tip: Chelsea to win the match and both teams to score ($1.85) – Bet Now
Chelsea to win 3-1
Everton vs Brighton – Goodison Park
Two sides looking to break into the top half of the Premier League face off on Merseyside as Everton host Brighton. The Toffees have improved in recent weeks under the stewardship of Carlo Ancelotti and they will be hoping to keep the run going here. Wins over Burnley and Newcastle have propelled the Toffees up to 11th in the table but a defeat to Manchester City last time out looks to have checked their progress somewhat. The Seagulls meanwhile sit 14th in the table following a win over South Coast rivals Bournemouth and a draw with Chelsea in their last two games. They have enjoyed a decent season under Graham Potter but they can’t seem to fully detach themselves from the relegation scrap just yet. This should be a tight game but Everton should have too much about them in front of their passionate home fans.
Betting tip: Everton to win the match and both teams to score ($2.9) – Bet Now
Everton to win 2-1
Leicester City vs Southampton – King Power Stadium
Leicester City ($1.56)
Southampton will be looking to revenge as they take on a Leicester side that beat them 9-0 earlier in the campaign. The Foxes have dropped points in three of their last five Premier League fixtures – including defeats to Liverpool and Manchester City but the manner of their wins over Newcastle and West Ham in their last two games will fill all associated with the club with confidence that a top 4 finish could be on the cards this term. The Saints meanwhile have been in fine form of late and look to have detached themselves from the relegation picture for the time being at least. The manner of their win over Tottenham on New Year’s Day was an indicator of exactly how far they have come in recent weeks and how they would love to turn the tables on Leicester here. The Foxes however look to be full of confidence and they should pick up three more points here at the King Power Stadium.
Betting tip: Leicester City to win the match and both teams to score ($2.45) – Bet Now
Leicester City to win 3-1
Manchester United vs Norwich City – Old Trafford
Manchester United ($1.3)
Norwich City ($11)
Manchester United will be desperate to get back to winning ways as they host bottom side Norwich City. The reds have endured a rotten spell of late, losing heavily to Arsenal and Manchester City as well as an uninspiring draw with Wolves in the FA Cup. They do sit 5th in the Premier League table however and they know that a win here will see them keep the pressure up on Chelsea above them in the pursuit for Champions League football. Bottom side Norwich have picked up points from their last 2 Premier League games with Tottenham and Crystal Palace and they will be looking to mount a survival charge over the second half of the season. The Canaries have struggled with consistency this season and find themselves in huge trouble 7 points from safety and they will need to start picking up points quickly if they are to stay up. Manchester United should have way too much about them for the Canaries here at Old Trafford.
Betting tip: Manchester United to win the match and both teams to score ($1.85) – Bet Now
Manchester United to win 3-1
Wolves vs Newcastle United – Molineux
Newcastle United ($8.5)
Two sides in need of three points following disappointing results on New Year’s Day face off as Newcastle travel to Wolves. Wolves find themselves in 7th in the table and they will be looking for a response following back to back defeats against Liverpool and Watford and they will be hoping a return to Molineux will provide inspiration here. The Toon find themselves in 13th place following a rotten run over the festive period that saw them lose to Manchester United, Everton and Leicester City. They looked to have designs of a top half finish but they will need to concentrate once again on avoiding the drop following their poor spell of late. This could be a tight game between two sides low on confidence but Wolves should prevail in what could be a low scoring encounter.
Betting tip: Wolves to win the match ($1.49) – Bet Now
Wolves to win 1-0
Tottenham vs Liverpool – Tottenham Hotspur Stadium
Jose Mourinho’s Spurs welcome Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool to town in what promises to be the stand out fixture of the Premier League weekend. Spurs can’t seem to develop any consistency currently and their 1-0 loss at Southampton Norwich last time out was testament to that. They sit 6th in the table currently and they will have designs of catching the likes of Chelsea and Manchester United above them if they can find some form over the next few months. Liverpool’s Premier League pursuit looks all but done following their comfortable 2-0 win over Sheffield United last time out and with a 13 point cushion on the chasing pack and a game in hand, they look to have their name on the trophy already. They rested some big name players in the FA Cup win over Everton last time out and they will be raring to go here. Tottenham won’t roll over for Liverpool but the reds should come through this test unscathed.
Betting tip: Liverpool to win the match and both teams to score ($2.65) – Bet Now
Liverpool to win 3-1
Bournemouth vs Watford – Vitality Stadium
Two sides in the relegation zone face off on the South Coast as Bournemouth take on Watford. The Cherries have endured a rotten spell of late and they are in the relegation mire as a result. The manner of their 4-0 thumping at West Ham last time out will be a real concern for Eddie Howe. His side has endured some tough luck with injuries but he will be keen to see his Cherries’ side bounce back here. Resurgent Watford beat Wolves last time out as they look to climb out of relegation trouble under Nigel Pearson. They are unbeaten in their last 5 matches in all competitions and they look to have confidence flowing through the squad currently. This should be a very tight match on the South Coast and it looks set to end up honours even.
Betting tip: The match to finish as a draw ($3.5) – Bet Now
Aston Villa vs Manchester City – Villa Park
Aston Villa ($15)
Manchester City ($1.22)
Manchester City head to the West Midlands to take on Dean Smith’s Aston Villa in what is a huge game for both sides. Villa look to be immersed in the relegation picture as they are sat in 17th place in the Premier League table. The manner of their win at Burnley last time out will be of huge encouragement for all associated with the club however and they will see this as a free hit against City. The blues meanwhile will be hoping to keep pace with the sides above them as continue to attempt to fight on 4 fronts. City just cannot seem to string enough wins together to catch Liverpool but their wins over Everton, Port Vale and Manchester United in the last week are an indicator of the strength in depth within their side and they will be hoping to continue their decent form here. Villa will push City all the way at Villa Park but the Blues should come through this test unscathed.
