The much-discussed Premier League winter break couldn’t stop the Liverpool juggernaut ploughing on as Jurgen Klopp’s men moved 25 points clear in their title bid. Whilst it looks to be a forgone conclusion as to the destination of the title this year, there is plenty of interest in the race to finish in the top 4/5 behind them as Manchester City’s Champions League ban looks set to be implemented from next season. Meaning the likes of Leicester, Chelsea, Tottenham, Sheffield United and Manchester United are all now very much in the Champions League picture. The relegation saga rumbles on too and with a full programme of fixtures this weekend, expect the usual smattering of thrills and spills.
Here are our picks for the 27th round of fixtures in the EPL:
2019/20 EPL Week 27 Preview
Chelsea vs Tottenham – Stamford Bridge
A classic London derby kicks off the Premier League programme this weekend as Chelsea host Tottenham at Stamford Bridge. The blues look to have a real fight on their hands to finish inside the top 4 this term following their 2-0 home defeat to Manchester United last time out. For the time being though it is still in their hands and they will be desperate to pick up three crucial points here. Tottenham meanwhile are gathering momentum under Jose Mourinho and have climbed up to 5th as a result, only one point behind Chelsea. They picked up a last gasp win at Aston Villa last time out and they look full of confidence currently. This should be a tight game in West London that could end up honours even.
Betting tip: The match to finish as a draw and both teams to score ($4.8) Bet Now
Southampton vs Aston Villa – St Mary’s Stadium
Aston Villa ($5.5)
Southampton will be looking to continue to further themselves from the relegation scrap as they host Aston Villa. The Saints sit 12th but have lost 3 of their last 4 games and they will be all too aware of the need to keep picking up points. With in-form Danny Ings in their ranks, they will be confident of putting pressure on a Villa side that is conceding far too many goals. Dean Smith’s men put up an excellent fight against Tottenham last time out but came up short and find themselves 1 point and 1 place above the relegation zone as a result. This should be an entertaining game on the South Coast which Southampton should just about prevail from.
Betting tip: Southampton to win the match and both teams to score ($2.65) Bet Now
Southampton to win 2-1
Burnley vs Bournemouth – Turf Moor
Mid-table Burnley host relegation threatened Bournemouth with both sides desperate for points as the end of the season draws nearer. Burnley have won 3 their last 4 matches and have climbed up to 11th as a result – having been immersed in the relegation picture at the start of January. Bournemouth meanwhile can’t seem to pull away completely from trouble and sit 2 points and 2 places above the drop zone as things stand. This should be an excellent game between two sides that always look to play on the front foot, and it could well end up honours even in Lancashire.
Betting tip: The match to finish as a draw and both teams to score ($4) Bet Now
Sheffield United vs Brighton – Bramall Lane
Sheffield United ($1.92)
Champions League chasing Sheffield United host Brighton in what has the makings of an entertaining encounter. The Blades continue to impress and the manner of their win over Bournemouth last time out was testament to their progress in the Premier League this season. They sit 6th, with a realistic chance of finishing in the top 4/5 come the end of the season and European football potentially beckons next term. Brighton fought back to earn a point at home to Watford last time out but find themselves in 15th, only three points above the drop zone and Graham Potter will be hoping his side can kick on over the final third of the season with top flight survival the absolute priority currently. This should be a good game and Sheffield United should just about find a way as they tend to have always done this season.
Betting tip: Sheffield United to win the match ($1.92) Bet Now
Sheffield United to win 2-1
Crystal Palace vs Newcastle United – Selhurst Park
Crystal Palace ($1.9)
Newcastle United ($4.55)
Two sides hoping to cement their place in mid-table face off as Crystal Palace welcome Newcastle United to Selhurst Park. Roy Hodgson’s side have struggled for form in recent weeks and have dropped to 14th in the table as a result. Their defeat at Everton last time out was particularly concerning and they will be eager to set the record straight here. Newcastle meanwhile have only won once in their last 5 and were well beaten by Arsenal last time out. Steve Bruce’s side sit in 13th position however and know that a couple more wins will practically guarantee their Premier League status this season. This could be a turgid affair with both sides short on confidence and a draw looks inevitable.
Betting tip: The match to finish as a draw ($3.45) Bet Now
Leicester City vs Manchester City – King Power Stadium
Leicester City ($4.5)
Manchester City ($1.75)
Third host second in the Premier League table as Manchester City travel to Leicester City. The Foxes are enjoying a terrific season under Brendan Rodgers and find themselves in 3rd place despite only winning once in their last 5 matches. They are very much in contention to finish in the Champions League places come the end of the season and they will be keen to test themselves against the defending champions here. Manchester City meanwhile continue to endure a tough season with the prospect of a Champions League ban looming large. They remain 2nd however and they will be looking to put distance between themselves and Leicester and with a cup final to look forward to at the end of the month, they will be keen to start gathering some momentum. Leicester are a decent side, but Manchester City tend to play with more freedom on the road and they should come through this one.
Betting tip: Manchester City to win the match ($1.75) Bet Now
Manchester City to win 3-1
Manchester United vs Watford – Old Trafford
Manchester United ($1.6)
High-flying Manchester United host Watford with the confidence levels at Old Trafford sure to be soaring following their famous win over Chelsea last time out. The reds have climbed to 7th in the table, only 3 points off the top 4 and very much in striking distance. Whilst they rode their luck at times at Stamford Bridge, the Red Devils are showing signs that they are growing in confidence. Watford meanwhile continue to scrap for Premier League survival under the stewardship of Nigel Pearson and they now only sit one point from safety. They comfortably beat United earlier in the campaign and they will be dreaming of doing the double over the reds this term. United however will have other ideas and they should come through this one in front of their passionate home support.
Betting tip: Manchester United to win the match and both teams to score ($2.4) Bet Now
Manchester United to win 3-1
Wolves vs Norwich City – Molineux
Norwich City ($6.65)
Wolves are yet another side that are chasing a top 4/5 finish and they will be desperate to keep the pressure on the sides above as they take on Norwich City. Wolves sit 8th in the table, 5 points off the top 4 but they will be all too aware of the need to keep picking up points having only won 1 of their last 5 fixtures. With Europa League football to contend with later this month too, they will be rotating their squad to the maximum. For Norwich meanwhile, it is now or never. The Canaries are 7 points adrift at the foot of the table and despite their strong showing against Liverpool last time out, they look dead and buried. This should be a closer game than many expect but Wolves should ultimately prevail at home.
Betting tip: Wolves to win the match to nil ($2.5) Bet Now
Wolves to win 2-0
Arsenal vs Everton – Emirates Stadium
Arsenal host Everton with both sides hoping to build on recent upturns in form. The Gunners have enjoyed a strong run under Mikel Arteta and have climbed up to 10th place in the table as a result. They have become very difficult to beat and have shored up their defensive line significantly. Everton meanwhile sit one place and 2 points above Arsenal going into this one and the Toffees have been a side reborn under Carlo Ancelotti. Dominic Calvert Lewin is leading the line with aplomb for the blues who are unbeaten in their last 5 matches in the Premier League. This should be a fantastic battle in North London, and it looks set to finish honours even.
Betting tip: The match to finish as a draw ($3.65) Bet Now
Liverpool vs West Ham United – Anfield
West Ham United ($18)
Liverpool’s title procession continues as they welcome West Ham United to Anfield on Monday night. The reds are 25 points clear of the chasing pack and look to have the Premier league title sewn up already. Their defeat to Atletico Madrid in the Champions League could prove to be a catalyst as they look to finish the season in style and continue to fight on three fronts. The Hammers meanwhile have been blighted by inconsistency all season and despite the arrival of David Moyes, results continue to frustrate their fans. They have slipped into the bottom three and they look to have a big task on their hands if they are to avoid the drop this term. Defensively, they continue to concede too many goals and that could be costly against a Liverpool side that will be looking to punish them here.
