Saudi Arabia vs Uruguay Preview
Having caused one of the biggest shocks in World Cup history in Qatar four years ago, Saudi Arabia will be chasing another South American scalp here, as they take on Uruguay in Miami.
For Saudi Arabia, their win over eventual winners Argentina proved to be a bit of a false dawn but they have developed into a very accomplished side at world level.
Uruguay meanwhile are well versed in World Cup football and the mix of youth and experience in their squad sees them as a genuine contender to go deep this time around.
With Spain and Cape Verde, the other two sides in this group, this feels like a big one for both sides, as they will fancy their respective chances against Cape Verde later on in the pool.
The Hard Rock Stadium in Miami should provide a perfect backdrop for this one and with plenty at stake, this should be a good watch for the neutral.
Here is a look ahead to Saudi Arabia vs Uruguay:
Best Bet
For all the improvements made by Saudi Arabia in recent times as an international side, there is no disputing that Uruguay are the strong favourites for this one.
A relative changing of the guard has been undertaken in Uruguayan football in recent years, but they still have some high quality performers in their ranks.
Having to come through qualifying alongside the likes of Brazil and Argentina is always a tough schooling for Uruguay as a team and they look well placed to have a good go at winning their first World Cup since 1950.
Saudi Arabia will be resolute defensively and will be tough to break down but Uruguay have some very accomplished players, all of whom are adept at playing big game football and they should get off to a winning start here.
Same Game Multi Bet
One of the reasons Saudi Arabia were so successful against Argentina in Qatar in 2022, was their confidence on the ball and their willingness to play.
That can of course be their undoing, but when they are looking to get the ball down and keep possession, they are a very technically accomplished outfit.
Having the likes of Darwin Nunez and Federico Valverde in their squad will obviously make Uruguay favourites for this one and they should out score Saudi Arabia.
Yet this Saudi Arabian outfit aren’t to be underestimated, and they could end up at least troubling the scorers here.
Best Value Bet
The progression of Federico Valverde at Real Madrid this season has been seismic.
From all-action utility man to deadly wide man, capable of playing as a false 9 or even a number 10, he has developed into the complete package.
His role for his country has also blossomed too, now wearing the captain’s armband, Valverde is the main man for Uruguay and as the designated penalty taker too, he could contribute meaningfully again in the opening game.
