2018 Australian Derby Form Guide & Tips

Ace High (Best Bet – $4.80) – BET NOW

Ace High has been promising a big run all campaign and he has been set for the Derby.

Trained by David Payne, the staying three-year-old has endured some tough runs in the Randwick and Rosehill Guineas, but is set to enjoy a nice run from barrier two.

The Victorian Derby winner looks well-placed to add another Derby to the list.

Vin De Dance ($8.50) – BET NOW

The New Zealand Derby winner finished third in the Rosehill Guineas before being relegated to fourth for causing interference with Furore.

The Baker/Forsman-trained gelding has plenty of miles in his legs and punters know that he can run the distance.

Should be in the first five home.

Tangled (Best Roughie – $17) – BET NOW

Punters had to be impressed with the ground he made up late in the Guineas.

The Chris Waller-trained runner was on the inside of runners, which didn’t help his cause, but he hit the line with purpose and that’s a great Derby indicator.

He might be better with the sting out of the track but consider as an each way play here.

Mongolianconqueror ($12) – BET NOW

We were keen on the Kiwi in the Rosehill Guineas but he was very disappointing in the run to the line.

Improvement is expected here but we would want longer odds to take the risk.

Capital Gain ($46) – BET NOW

We’re still unsure why connections are putting him in these tough races.

Hasn’t shown form for a long time and he deserves something much easier than this.

Levendi ($12) – BET NOW

Landed a big betting plunge to win last start at Rosehill and there’s solid confidence in the market again.

Group 2 Carbine Club Stakes winner in Melbourne and that form is going to stack up well in the Derby.

Only query is whether he gets the distance.

Astoria ($19) – BET NOW

Punters should always respect this stable and Astoria has been close in all four runs this campaign.

Looks ready to win a race shortly but a win here should come as a surprise to most.

Furore (Best Each Way – $6.50) – BET NOW

Wouldn’t have beaten D’argento last start with a clear run but he would have gone close to running second.

The previously-unbeaten runner has looked above average at provincial grades and he passed the test with flying colours last start.

Big chance here if that run didn’t take too much out of him.

Salsamor ($18) – BET NOW

Tough to rule out anything from the Busuttin/Young stables at the moment and this colt was making big ground in open-class grade last start.

That run behind Auvray is going to stack up well against his own age and despite drawing wide, he could finish over the top of them at odds.

Weather With You ($20) – BET NOW

Looked above average when taking out the Geelong Guineas last year but he hasn’t quite come back at his best.

Solid run behind Levendi last start but we’re not sure if the Tulloch is the best form race for the Derby this year.

The Lord Mayor ($26) – BET NOW

Kiwi runner which disappointed in Australia last start and he might need a heavy track to show his best.

Mission Hill ($11) – BET NOW

Another Kiwi runner which didn’t get all favours last start when seventh behind D’argento.

Well-regarded by the stable and they know how to win age-group races in Australia.

Good track suits and he looks like the Kiwis’ best chance.

Endowment ($35) – BET NOW

New Zealand runner which would need to improve to win this.

Didn’t fire last start and we don’t think he’s up to this level just yet.

Belfast ($10) – BET NOW

Made good ground behind Levendi last start and he’s a colt on the rise.

The Derby might have come up too soon for him, but he’s got the scope to win at this level and his breeding suggests that he’ll be right in the mix.

Underestimate at your peril.

Mongolian Marshal ($21) – BET NOW

Fair fourth behind Levendi last start after showing good promise in New Zealand.

We’re going to allow him another chance to show his best and there’s value with the $20.

Main Stage ($51) – BET NOW

Another quality runner for the Busuttin/Young stable.

Hasn’t hit his straps in two runs of late and he would need to turn his form around in a big way to score in this.

Condor ($91) – BET NOW

Looks well-held against this quality opposition, given his best form has come on the Friday night circuit.

Pissaro ($101) – BET NOW

Hasn’t run a good race since breaking maiden grades and he’s no chance in this.
