Australian Derby Form Guide & Tips

1. Lion’s Roar ($8.50) Bet @ Sportsbet

That was a nice effort for fourth last start and the extra distance won’t do him any harm.

Punters get value odds for Lion’s Roar and he opened at $13, which was an incredible price. Include him in your selections.

2. Rocket Spade (Best Each Way – $9) Bet @ Sportsbet

The Kiwis have a good record in this race and he won the New Zealand Derby just two starts back.

He was given an easy win at Tauranga to prepare for this and given his ability to run the distance, punters get value odds.

Expect the Kiwi to be right in the mix.

3. Sky Lab (Best Bet – $5) Bet @ Sportsbet

We have put Sky Lab on top based on his grinding effort for second behind Mo’unga last start. It was a tough effort and he looks like a Derby horse in the making.

James McDonald takes the ride, which is a positive and we expect him to be fighting out the finish once again.

4. Milford ($67) Bet @ Sportsbet

Another Kiwi that finished eighth last start. We didn’t see enough from him to warrant attention, but he could finish in the first half of the field.

5. The Frontman ($31) Bet @ Sportsbet

The third Kiwi in the field and much like Milford, we didn’t see enough last start. He is probably below the best runners in this field.

6. Yaletown (Best Roughie – $17) Bet @ Sportsbet

Yaletown is a runner that makes its own luck near the speed. We expect Tim Clark to push forward from the draw and sit on the pace.

He comes off a gallant win and while the opposition is chasing, he could be off and gone around the home turn.

7. Young Werther ($12) Bet @ Sportsbet

The Derby has been the goal all along but we expected him to win this campaign. He hasn’t, so our confidence levels are dipping.

He gets a strong rider in the saddle and that helps, but we can’t have him in selections at this stage.

8. Khoekhoe ($9.50) Bet @ Sportsbet

The three-year-old colt is classy at best and we wouldn’t be leaving him out of selections. He is a three-time winner and he has won big races in the past.

Craig Williams takes the ride, which is a bonus, and he should get the perfect trip from barrier three.

9. Prompt Prodigy ($51) Bet @ Sportsbet

Punters get big odds and rightfully so. He’s not the worst runner in this field but the level of opposition increases for this contest.

We would prefer to see him in something easier.

10. Explosive Jack ($17) Bet @ Sportsbet

Always around the mark and there has been steady money coming for him throughout the week.

However, he comes off a placing at Bendigo and it might not be the best form race. $17 is a tough short for our liking, but keep him in mind.

11. Toscanini ($41) Bet @ Sportsbet

Only a battling run against easier opposition last start. Drawn well but this race could be too tough and a win wouldn’t surprise.

12. Favreau ($17) Bet @ Sportsbet

He was there to strike last week but he couldn’t quite get past. It wasn’t a bad Derby trial and punters get value odds this time around.

Barrier 16 doesn’t help, but he has time to find cover and be right around the mark.

13. Rondino ($151) Bet @ Sportsbet

Disappointing effort for ninth last time out and we don’t think he’ll come close to winning the Australian Derby.

14. Zakspeed ($151) Bet @ Sportsbet

Another runner paying a big price and rightfully so. He is a one-race winner and his recent form doesn’t come close to being good enough.

15. Olympic Gaze ($151) Bet @ Sportsbet

Not in great form and although he gets the inside draw, it shouldn’t matter. Triple-figure odds available if you’re willing to take the risk.

16. Montefilia ($3.50) Bet @ Sportsbet

Comes off a lovely run for third in the Rosehill Guineas and she deserves to be well-backed.

She doesn’t go on top for us, but she is certainly in our trifecta and first-four calculations. Her form points towards a big run and the weight advantage helps.
