Australian Derby Form Guide & Tips

1. Castelvecchio (Best Bet – $2.90) Bet Now

A change in tactics proved the winning tactics last start. The talented colt would usually drop back from the barriers, but riding handy to the pace was needed.

His half-length win at Rosehill was a great guide for this race and we can expect James McDonald to ride positively again.

He deserves to be the favourite and his current odds could firm throughout the week.

2. Shadow Hero ($3.70) Bet Now

Punters should respect Shadow Hero despite running only fourth behind Castelvecchio last start.

The son of Pierro got too far back in the run and he’s much better when sitting on the pace. Expect him to settle close and given his unbeaten record on this track, he demands attention.

$3.70 is a touch short, but include in selections.

3. Warning ($5) Bet Now

We gave Warning a chance last start but he floundered late in the race. The Victorian Derby winner is proven over this distance, so we’re not ruling him out on one bad run.

He has been set for this race and if conditions firm up throughout the week, expect the $5 to shorten. However, if it remains in the heavy range, he could struggle.

4. Sherwood Forest (Best Roughie – $14) Bet Now

Rule out the Kiwis at your own peril. The New Zealand Derby winner was never going to enjoy the drop back in distance last start.

Getting back to 2400m is ideal and he knows how to handle tough conditions. Punters should have him on their ticket at the value odds.

Kerrin McEvoy takes over from Michael Walker who is stuck in Victoria.

5. Eric the Eel ($26) Bet Now

This will be Eric the Eel’s first attempt over this distance and against this class, but he could be a chance.

He gets back in the run and relies on a strong tempo up front, but we could see him running on stylishly late.

He’s not in our top five, but stranger things have happened.

6. Quick Thinker (Best Each Way – $9) Bet Now

The Kiwi was a dominant winner last week when scoring by 1.3 lengths over a tough field. He has looked like a Derby type from the word go.

Trained by the Baker/Forsman team, who know how to win the Australian Derby, he will relish the rise in distance.

Expect Opie Bosson to sit just off the pace and have him going through his gears around the final turn.

7. Zebrowski ($14) Bet Now

He was unable to reel in Quick Thinker last week, but he stuck on gamely. It was a good sign and we wouldn’t rule him out based on that effort.

It should be a good form guide coming into this race and punters are getting double-figure odds.

Hugh Bowman sticks with him.

8. Chains of Honour ($81) Bet Now

His last two starts were poor and we’re not surprised to see his long odds. He doesn’t handle wet tracks, so the conditions are against him.

9. Skiddaw ($26) Bet Now

Skiddaw comes to Sydney after winning at Bendigo last week. It was a strong effort but we’re not sure it’s Derby form.

Drawing an inside barrier helps but he would need to find a few lengths to beat this field.

10. Diasonic ($26) Bet Now

Diasonic battled on bravely behind Quick Thinker last week and he has plenty of improvement to come.

The Laming-trained gelding scored a win on debut and hasn’t won since, but the rise in distance could see the best of him.

He’s a chance at the odds.

11. Get the Idea ($101) Bet Now

He won his first two starts for John Sargent but he was poor when rising in class last start.

The triple-figure odds aren’t surprising and it would take a mammoth effort to win.

12. Sacramento ($61) Bet Now

This stable can pull off an upset result but we’re not sure he’s up to this level. He owns two wins from 10 starts and he has struggled when racing against good opposition.
