Australian Derby Form Guide & Tips
Extra Brut ($21) Bet Now
Won the Victorian Derby in the spring but hasn’t been able to replicate that form in two runs back this campaign.
The rise in distance suits but that’s where the positives end.
Madison County (Best Roughie – $12) Bet Now
Continues to be well-backed after opening at $12 (back out to $12 again) and he should have won last week when running second behind Angel Of Truth.
The pace of the race didn’t suit him and although the Doncaster was an option, trainers are confident he’ll be a winning chance in the Derby.
In A Twinkling ($41) Bet Now
Ran second in the New Zealand Derby two back but only battled for fifth last time out. Would need to find a turn-of-foot to win.
Arrogant (Best Bet – $5.50) Bet Now
Ran fourth in the New Zealand Derby before running The Autumn Sun to within a head in the Group 1 Rosehill Guineas.
That was an amazing display for a runner which had to travel and wasn’t suited by the shorter distance.
His chances only increase over 2400m and we’re not surprised to see money coming for him.
Chapada ($6) Bet Now
Made good ground when third behind The Autumn Sun and Arrogant last start. Looks as though the 2400m will suit.
$4.80 is too short in the betting for our liking, given that he’s a one-win gelding who finished last in the Caulfield Guineas.
Surely Sacred ($19) Bet Now
Another Kiwi runner which wasn’t disgraced last start in the Rosehill Guineas but didn’t show much speed either.
Trainer has had success in Australia and we wouldn’t rule him out completely.
Platinum Invador ($46) Bet Now
Had form on wet tracks in New Zealand but showed little in the heavy conditions at Rosehill last start.
Will get the distance, which is a positive, but we’re up in the air about this Kiwi runner at the moment. Would be a risky bet.
Global Exchange ($11) Bet Now
More than capable stayer in the making which has won three consecutive races in Melbourne. The big query is whether that form stacks up in Sydney.
He’s a colt by Dundeel which is bred to win and it could be around the mark.
Stars Of Carrum (Best Each Way – $11) Bet Now
Dead-set stayer which has needed all five runs this campaign to prepare for the distance. He won over 2040m at Moonee Valley last preparation before running second in the Victorian Derby.
The form out of that race hasn’t stacked up well but he’s a nice type which will see out 2400m and even more.
Aramayo ($26) Bet Now
Contines to run at this level but he’s not showing enough to warrant inclusion in bets. Fifth in the Rosehill Guineas but he was 7.5 lengths off them.
Would need to have found a couple of lengths.
Angel Of Truth ($20) Bet Now
Led and kicked strongly to beat Madison County last start but it had everything run to suit. The slow pace suited him perfectly but things will be harder here.
Prepared to just watch at this stage.
The Chosen One ($27) Bet Now
Won in New Zealand last Saturday at Group 3 level and has been flown over to contest this race. Not sure that form lines up well for this and he’s under the odds in the market.
Cossetot ($27) Bet Now
Won the Hobart Guineas earlier this preparation before running three consecutive placings. Two of those came behind Global Exchange and we’d label him an each-way chance, but no better.
Declarationofheart ($15) Bet Now
Ran a nose behind Global Exchange at Moonee Valley last start and has since run second in a trial at Randwick behind Happy Clapper.
Gets a soft run from the inside draw and it has remained steady in the betting throughout.
Costello ($31) Bet Now
Breeding suggests he will get the distance but his form isn’t quite good enough to warrant attention.
Best win came in rating 74 grade and this is some rise in class.
Twinspier ($151) Bet Now
Connections are having a go but the odds represent its winning chances. Fourth at Bendigo last start in what was a very average race.
Shaman ($126) Bet Now
6.6 lengths behind Angel Of Truth last start and we’d prefer to see him in something much easier than this.
Frankely Awesome ($6) Bet Now
Filly by Frankel, which ran on nicely behind Verry Elleegant last Saturday but she’s trying to run two massive races within seven days.
That’s not easy to do and she’s too short in the betting for that risk. Her opening odds of $11 have been smashed but that could be an overreaction and we’re not biting.
Yulong Tavion ($126) Bet Now
Well-beaten last start and we couldn’t have him here.
