Canterbury Stakes Form Guide & Tips
(1) Ceolwulf (Best Each Way – $9.00)
Dropping in distance won’t help his chances, but he’s a classy type and we think that’s enough to take him close.
Punters get value odds in the Group 1 race and we’re happy to take the risk.
(2) Here to Shock ($7.50)
He went to New Zealand and won at Group 1 level, and he has been well-backed to win again.
He’s taking on some tough types in this race, but the betting signs are encouraging and we’re happy to include him in our Canterbury Stakes picks.
(3) Airman ($51.00)
The five-year-old isn’t good enough to handle this level of opposition, hence the big odds available with bookmakers.
(4) Militarize ($19.00)
The son of Dundeel ran four consecutive placings last preparation, which is solid enough form to consider for this level of racing.
Any moisture in the surface is ideal and he could add value to first four picks.
(5) Pericles ($31.00)
Disappointing behind Mr Brightside at Caulfield last start but that was an elite field. However, this isn’t any easier.
A strong betting push on race day would be a good sign, but we’re not including him in our picks.
(6) Royal Patronage (Best Roughie – $17.00)
Boasting two fresh up wins and a win at Randwick, Royal Patronage is good enough to figure in the finish.
He will likely roll forward and try to lead throughout, so the odds are worth including.
(7) Celestial Legend ($31.00)
His best form came as a three-year-old and we can’t see his recent form being good enough to run well.
(8) Encap ($71.00)
The four-year-old has yet to win from four fresh up starts, and as the odds suggest, we can’t see that changing on Saturday.
(9) Sunshine in Paris ($6.50)
She ended last prep with a win at Flemington. The five-year-old is all class on her day and she owns three wins from four fresh up starts.
We’re happy to include her in our picks at the each-way price.
(10) Magic Time ($4.00)
Looking to score consecutive wins is Magic Time, who picked up late to score at Randwick last start.
We’re not sure if that’s the best form guide, but there is confidence in betting markets, which adds to her appeal.
(11) Stefi Magnetica ($8.00)
She is always well-backed but she doesn’t win often enough for our liking. We need to see her run well before we include her in selections.
(12) Switzerland (Best Bet – $5.00)
Switzerland is unbeaten in two second-up starts and three starts at Randwick, so we’re happy to include the classy type.
The son of Snitzel has a stud career in waiting, and winning the Canterbury Stakes would bolster his stud price.
He’s good enough to put this field away at each-way odds.
