Cox Plate Form Guide & Tips
(1) Light Infantry Man ($51.00)
His form hasn’t improved this season, so we can’t recommend him in the Cox Plate. The odds tell the story, and it would be a big form reversal to see him win.
(2) Antino ($3.60)
Our second-best pick for the 2025 Cox Plate, but he’s not paying enough to warrant as an each-way bet.
There is nothing wrong with his form this time in, including a tough second placing behind Sir Delius in the main lead-up race.
Tactics are always interesting for Antino, who could pull the trigger mid-race and make a run for glory.
(3) Attrition ($41.00)
We don’t think he’s good enough to win the Cox Plate despite bringing in consistent form. Those placings came in slightly easier races, and it would be a big effort to win.
Save him for another day, when he’s not facing the best weight-for-age horses.
(4) Buckaroo (Best Roughie – $16.00)
Buckaroo wasn’t suited by the small field last start, so we’re prepared to give him another chance.
We believe he’s better over this distance compared to 3200m in the Melbourne Cup, and he’s here to win. The $16 is a good price for a classy type, who will sit midfield and come with a big late run.
Winning wouldn’t be a massive shock, so take the odds.
(5) Globe ($16.00)
Controlled the speed when beating Treasurethe Moment last start, but this is a different type of race. He could find the front and lead, but we don’t think it will be a slow tempo.
The other jockeys are smart enough to ensure it’s a truly run Cox Plate, and that won’t benefit Globe. He’s a first four chance at best.
(6) Via Sistina (Best Bet – $2.20)
This is her grand final and we’re not worried about her form coming into this race. All roads lead to The Valley, where she should defend her title.
Her 2024 Cox Plate win was one for the ages, and Chris Waller has been preparing her nicely for this race.
We can’t quite believe the $2.20. Punters are showing trepidation, but she’s a champion, and the best horse in the race.
(7) Treasurethe Moment ($9.50)
It’s hard to say if the bubble has burst after two second placings, but the injury setback did her no favours.
She is a nice type, and with three runs under her belt this prep, she should be fitter, and she’s the forgotten runner in the field.
We’re happy to give her another chance at the odds.
(8) Aeliana (Best Each Way – $6.50)
Much like Via Sistina, she hasn’t been suited by the races this preparation. She will look to settle off the speed and come with a big late finish.
The ability is there with the Waller-trained mare, who is easily good enough to win the Cox Plate with only 55.5kg on her back.
Punters should expect late betting moves.
(9) Nepotism ($23.00)
Connections keep having a go in tough races, but he’s not running at his best this season. The light weight brings him into it, but there have been betting three-year-old chances over the last few years.
