Cranbourne Cup Day horse racing tips

Race 1. (12:35) The Wrecker Plate (1000m)

#12 – You Ess Ess Are @ $4.40 – Bet @ Sportsbet

The Busuttin/Young-trained filly showed pace when scoring a jumpout win and there has been solid betting support.

She is a daughter of Russian Revolution, so she is bred to show early speed and drawing barrier three is ideal.

It could pay to watch for late betting moves in an open contest.

Race 2. (13:10) O’Brien Real Estate Classic (2025m)

#1 – Blushing Tycoon @ $1.75 – Bet @ Sportsbet

Punters have to take short odds for Blushing Tycoon, but the three-year-old colt should be putting this field to bed.

The son of Written Tycoon finished second behind Spirit of Gaylard at Flemington last start, and he showed good fight to the line.

The small field shouldn’t pose much of a threat.

Race 3. (13:45) Frankston Sand Soil Handicap (1200m)

#1 – Scissor Step @ $3 – Bet @ Sportsbet

Scissor Step scored impressively at Ballarat three starts back and his form since has been solid enough.

The three-year-old ran second behind Generation at Moonee Valley, so that form bodes well for this level of racing.

Getting the inside draw makes him awfully tough to beat on Saturday.

Race 4. (14:20) Mazda Shooting Star C3 (1500m)

#5 – Lyrical Lad @ $5.50 – Bet @ Sportsbet

Lyrical Lad might have needed two runs back from a spell and he could be ready to fire now.

The Phillip Stokes-trained son of Roman Emperor owns a win and a placing at Cranbourne, so he enjoys the track.

He won here by a nose in May and a repeat of that efforts takes him close.

Race 5. (15:00) Rosemont Stud Pendant (1400m)

#6 – April Rain @ $2 – Bet @ Sportsbet

Forget April Rain went around at Flemington last start when the favourite never got a chance with Kerrin McEvoy in the saddle.

The Chris Waller-trained mare is a quality type who owns three wins and three second placings from eight starts.

She owns a quality turn-of-foot, so we’re happy to take the $2 available.

Race 6. (15:40) Procon Apache Cat Classic (1000m)

#4 – Bless Her @ $3.90 – Bet @ Sportsbet

Bless Her didn’t fire at Flemington behind Minhaaj, but we’re prepared to give her another chance against easier company.

The Clayton Douglas-trained mare looked much better running second at Caulfield behind Mileva, so that’s the form guide we’re using for this race.

Carrying 54kg makes her tough to beat.

Race 7. (16:20) TAB Cranbourne Cup (1600m)

#11 – Our Playboy @ $4.40 – Bet @ Sportsbet

Our Playboy showed a devastating turn-of-foot to win at Flemington last start. The four-year-old got the better of a quality field, so his form checks out.

The son of Sebring is unbeaten in two starts over this distance and although drawing barrier 17 isn’t ideal, he will likely settle back and flash late.

He gets only 55kg on his back, so he must be considered.

Race 8. (17:00) Reed Cranes Marathon BM84 (2500m)

#3 – Mankayan @ $3.60 – Bet @ Sportsbet

Punters have been waiting for Mankayan to win and he won’t get a better chance to break his Australian duck.

The import finished second behind Great House last start, which almost secured him a place in the Melbourne Cup.

Getting 3kg off his back is ideal and he’s the class act of this field.

Race 9. (17:40) Hertz BM70 (1300m)

#13 – Staredown @ $10 – Bet @ Sportsbet

Staredown is fresh up and he could start the season with a winning effort at Cranbourne.

The Maher/Eustace-trained gelding won his only start at this distance, and although his best form has come against easier opposition, he put two lengths on the field three back at Sandown.

Dropping to 54kg helps and punters get odds worth taking.
