2018 Doncaster Mile Form Guide & Tips
Humidor (Best Roughie – $9.50) – BET NOW
Humidor isn’t exactly a roughie, but the $9 and $3 to place makes him worth backing.
The Cox Plate placegetter behind Winx is in good form having won the Group 2 Blamey Stakes prior to this run and he’s a champion type when he’s on his game.
A former New Zealand runner, Humidor is now a big-race performer in Australia and only the weight of 58kg counts against him here.
Tosen Stardom ($26) – BET NOW
Former Japanese runner which has shown glimpses of his old form over the last season, but he’s not running up to his best ability and a win here would surprise.
Happy Clapper (Best Bet – $5) – BET NOW
It took Winx to defeat Happy Clapper last start and the Patrick Webster-trained runner pushed the champion mare close.
That is arguably his best career performance and it came on the heels of a win in the Group 1 Canterbury Stakes.
He’s a lovely seven-year-old which has a good turn-of-foot and he looks well-placed to assert his authority against this field.
Endless Drama ($26) – BET NOW
There’s some confidence in the camp around Endless Drama after winning two starts back at Randwick, but he finished 3.6 lengths behind Happy Clapper last start.
It’s hard to see this stayer bridging that gap and a finish in the first half of the field would be a success for this European import.
Prized Icon ($35) – BET NOW
Former Derby winner which doesn’t match up well against this field.
Weight helps but he’s a place chance at best.
Crack Me Up ($19) – BET NOW
Talented on his day but is probably unders at $18.
The Bjorn Baker-trained four-year-old has performed best against his own age group and although weighted well at 53kg, it’s tough to see him winning a Doncaster.
Invincible Gem ($31) – BET NOW
We were confident with this mares’ chances leading into the Sydney autumn but she has disappointed us somewhat.
She ran third behind Happy Clapper fresh up before setting the speed in the George Ryder and being reeled in late to finish fifth.
She’s got class and is not the worst at $31.
Tom Melbourne ($15) – BET NOW
We love Tom Melbourne but we’ve had to put the que in the rack for this run.
He’s a great money spinner, earning his connections almost $1 million in stakes and he’s got the ability to win, but he loves finding one better.
Could win if they save him up for one last run at them and it would be poetic justice.
Kementari ($3.75) – BET NOW
Handy run behind Winx in the George Ryder and his form prior included three consecutive wins.
Is he good enough as a three-year-old to defeat some of the best open class horses in Australia? We’re not sure and we don’t want to take the $3.70 to find out, but there’s no denying his ability at age-group level.
Comin’ Through ($14) – BET NOW
Nice type for Chris Waller which always puts in 100%.
A winner of the Ajax Stakes last time to the races, the four-year-old has the form on the board which could test a few of these and he’s not the worst chance at the odds.
Carrying 51.5kg is going to feel odd for him and that should bring him into contention.
Lanciato ($19) – BET NOW
Has been in good form this season, winning three in a row but this is much harder.
$19 is a touch below value and with an apprentice jockey in the saddle, we can’t see him being a winning threat.
Egg Tart ($34) – BET NOW
Form has been scrambled this season and she showed nothing last start.
Boom filly two campaigns ago but we couldn’t include her here.
Arbeitsam ($20) – BET NOW
Lovely front-running win last time out and it could give them all something to chase.
Faces a rise in class for this but he has always shown the ability to win at group level and we wouldn’t put an upset past him.
Mister Sea Wolf ($61) – BET NOW
Caught wide last start so that run was better than it looked, but he’s not a Doncaster type and he shouldn’t get close to them.
Cool Chap ($61) – BET NOW
Twice-placed this campaign but not at this level.
Cory Parish likes to score upset wins in Group 1 races, but not this time.
D’argento (Best Each Way – $7) – BET NOW
Nice odds on offer for the Rosehill Guineas winner which gets in here with 49kg.
Could have run in the Derby but Chris Waller believes he’s a genuine Doncaster threat and with a stud career looking, D’argento’s connections would love to get some of this.
Great chance at the odds.
