Futurity Stakes Form Guide & Tips
(1) Pericles (Best Each Way – $6.00)
His record at Caulfield consists of no wins from five attempts, but he has been close with three placings.
The Bjorn Baker-trained gelding ran second behind Ceolwulf at Group 1 level last time out, and something similar takes him close.
He’s a solid each-way bet at $6.
(2) Buckaroo ($23.00)
There is nothing wrong with his first-up record, but he should want more racing under his belt at this stage of his career.
Watch out of him when getting over 2000m+.
(3) Evaporate ($6.50)
Another runner who has yet to win at Caulfield, and he could want the run. He has been consistent throughout his career, but there are some smart types in this field.
Only one of his wins have come over 1400m, so we’re prepared to leave him out of trifecta bets, but he’s worth including as a first four chance.
(4) Veight ($35.00)
His last two placings have been encouraging, but this is another step up in class. His best form came as a three-year-old, and we can’t see his form improving enough to win.
(5) Watch Me Rock ($8.00)
Second behind Cosmic Crusader at Ascot last start, which was a massive effort. That form has yet to be seen in Melbourne, but there has been enough betting interest since markets opened.
Mark Walker takes over the training duties, and we wouldn’t be surprised to see him figure in the finish with William Pike in the saddle.
(6) Feroce ($10.00)
It was a good resuming run when finishing a nose behind Tom Kitten, but he will need to find a half-length to beat this field.
After opening at $9, his odds have drifted, which isn’t a good sign. He might need another couple of runs under his belt to show his best.
(7) Treasurethe Moment (Best Bet – $2.20)
The best horse in the field, and although her last four runs were slightly below her best, she was taking on the best in the business.
She lost no admirers running behind the likes of Via Sistina and Pride of Jenni, and we think she’ll be right to go on Saturday.
Look for Damian Lane to settle just off the pace, and she’ll be there to strike at the top of the straight.
(8) Vivy Air ($51.00)
A good winner at Rosehill two back before heading to Ascot. It was a solid effort, but as the odds suggest, she could struggle to keep up.
(9) Leica Lucy (Best Roughie – $10.00)
The former Kiwi runner and Oaks winner could hit the ground running with a big effort. She comes off a second placing behind Pride of Jenni, where she had to do the chasing.
If they go quickly enough up front, she could be the one hitting the line with a sustained effort, and $10.00 is a generous offering.
