It’s a good midweek meeting in Hong Kong, where Happy Valley hosts a nine-race card. Zac Purton takes a lot of the headlines in betting markets, but we have found value with apprentice riders this season, and they are worth following again.

Race 1. (21:35) D'aguilar Handicap (1650m)

#10 - Oriental Surprise

Oriental Surprise looks to cap off five consecutive placings with a win, and he doesn’t need to improve too much to handle this field.

The six-year-old son of Mikki Isle has yet to win from 31 starts, but he has 10 placings to his name, and that counts for plenty in this field.

Dropping to 52.5kg with Nichola Yuen riding helps.

#3 - Akermanis Gold

Seeking consecutive wins is Akermanis Gold, who was too good for them when scoring at Happy Valley last time out.

That was a good resuming run this preparation, and it could kick-start his career, which hadn’t shown much consistency.

Getting 1kg off his back is helpful, so include him at each-way odds.

The four-year-old son of D’argento looked good when winning at Sha Tin last prep, and he shouldn’t take long to win at Happy Valley.

3kg comes off his back, and it’s another good ride for Yuen.

#1 - Brownneedsfurther

Brownneedsfurther won either side of a spell, and it takes a good horse to resume from a spell with a win.

The five-year-old son of Needs Further pulled out a good finish to score by a nose, and that should give him confidence moving forward.

Brenton Avdulla takes the ride, and although it’s a hot field, he should run well.

#3 - Helene Feeling

Helene Feeling hasn’t been overly consistent lately, but his best form is good enough to put this field away.

The six-year-old is a nine-time winner overall, and he produced back-to-back wins at Happy Valley in December last year.

That form is good enough to include him in horse racing picks.

#4 - Gameplayer Elite
