2018 J.J. Atkins Form Guide & Tips
Lean Mean Machine (Best Each Way – $5) – BET NOW
The Chris Waller-trained colt scored at upset odds in the Sires’ Produce Stakes last start and he could score at each way odds again.
He’s a son of Zoustar which handled tricky conditions best at Doomben last start. The track is expected to be in similar condition this Saturday and there’s confidence coming from the stable.
Likely to push the favourite close.
Zousain (Best Roughie – $7.50) – BET NOW
Not quite a “roughie” but he’s paying good odds to rebound after suffering a loss to his stablemate Lean Mean Machine last start.
The colt by Zoustar was a terrific 2.5-length winner prior to that defeat and although he’s probably better on a rock-hard track, he still has winning claims.
Boomsara ($18) – BET NOW
Consistent gelding which ran well for third behind Lean Mean Machine last start.
That might have been a flash-in-the-pan performance from the Chris Munce-trained gelding and we’d need to see another strong performance to back him confidently.
Sesar ($16) – BET NOW
Looks a nice type in the making and there is confidence in the market at double-figure odds.
Drawing barrier 13 is going to make it tricky but the recent Gold Coast winner could prove his worth.
The Autumn Sun (Best Bet – $2.35) – BET NOW
Unbeaten Redoute’s Choice colt which has plenty of offer here.
The Waller-trained runner scored by 1.5 lengths on debut at Randwick before repeating the dose by a length last start.
The form in behind The Autumn Sun appeals and he has drawn to receive a gun run from barrier six. Kerrin McEvoy should find a good spot and produce the colt at the right time.
$2.40 is a fair price given his natural ability.
Grim Reaper ($51) – BET NOW
Wasn’t able to bridge the gap when running second behind Commander last start.
Nice run for that grade but Group 1 racing looks a touch too tough for the Domesday gelding.
Home Ground ($46) – BET NOW
Has scored consecutive wins coming into this and John Sargent knows how to produce a Group 1 winner.
The odds suggest that he might need more time and distance. We’d have to agree based on his breeding so wait for a better opportunity.
Champagne Garden ($101) – BET NOW
Scored a win at $1.31 last start but not at this level. Will need to improve significantly to upset them at triple-figure odds.
Home Made ($46) – BET NOW
Another Sargent-trained runner which is long in the market at $41.
Didn’t fire last start and running in the first half of the field would be considered a success.
Peppi La Few ($71) – BET NOW
Wasn’t able to win as the favourite at Sunshine Coast last start and his form prior was suspect.
He hasn’t won for four career starts and it’s tough to see a maiden runner taking out the J.J. Atkins.
Fundamentalist ($7.50) – BET NOW
Has attracted attention after opening at $12. That’s a fair push in the betting and the addition of Craig Williams in the saddle is a bonus.
The Lindsay Park-trained two-year-old is coming off consecutive placings at Morphettville but we’re not sure if that’s the best form guide for this.
Plumaro ($16) – BET NOW
Didn’t have anything go to plan behind Lean Mean Machine last start and it could be the improver of the field.
Ran second behind Plumaro prior to that and she’s going to get a good run in transit from barrier 3 so consider here.
Miss Sara ($71) – BET NOW
One win from 11 starts but she has five placings to her record.
The form in behind Commander at the Sunshine Coast isn’t the form to look at for the J.J. Atkins and we’d want triple-figure odds.
Sizzling Ace ($14) – BET NOW
More than capable of a win and the inside draw is going to see her land in a good position.
Punters have been waiting for the daughter of Sizzling to land the prize since she debuted last December and the payoff could come here.
The soft track conditions won’t worry her and she could run in the first four.
