Kentucky Derby Runner-By-Runner Guide

1. Renegade (Best Bet) @ $5.50

He won the Arkansas Derby in fine style last time out, and that’s usually a good betting guide for the Kentucky Derby.

It’s one of the more wide-open races in years, and he should use the inside draw to sit handy to the pace and kick strongly at the top of the stretch.

2. Albus @ $34.00

Unbeaten in two runs this preparation, but he hasn’t been facing tough opposition. As the odds suggest, he could struggle here.

3. Intrepido @ $34.00

Fourth in the Santa Anita Derby, but we would have liked to have seen more from him. Prefer to bet on the top three in that race.

4. Litmus Test @ $29.00

He didn’t fire last start at Oaklawn Park, which is rare for a Bob Baffert-trained runner. It would be a big training performance to get him to win.

5. Right to Party @ $41.00

He ran second in the Wood Memorial, which isn’t a bad form guide. We’re not sure he’s running well enough to win, but he could finish in the first half of the field.

6. Commandment (Best Each Way) @ $6.00

A lovely type in the making after making it four straight wins. He comes off a win in the Florida Derby, and he demands respect.

Punters get $6 for the son of Into Mischief, and everything points towards a strong run for the Brad Cox-trained colt.

Japanese runners are always tough to line up in the US. He’s an unbeaten colt, so he could enter first-four calculations.

8. So Happy (Best Roughie) @ $12.00

The Santa Anita Derby is typically a good form race, and So Happy made it three wins from four starts in the key lead-up race.

He is sneaking under the radar at double-figure odds, but based on his figures, he can’t be left out.

He didn’t have much luck when running second in the Florida Derby behind Commandment, and we love that form.

He gets in at double-figure odds, and he could be the best-backed runner on race day. We’re including him in all bets.

The UAE Derby winner, and we don’t think that form is as strong as it used to be. Happy to leave him out.

11. Incredibolt @ $26.00

A winner at Colonial Downs last time out, which isn’t a good form guide. $26 is a touch too short for our liking.

He ran third in the Florida Derby, so he must include him in picks. He is one of the best-backed runners in the field.

The wide barrier isn’t ideal, but he should finish off stoutly.

Suffered his first defeat when running second behind So Happy. That’s a good form guide, so the $21 is a fair price from bookmakers.

Baffert knows how to train Kentucky Derby winners, so don’t discount his chances.

An unbeaten runner for Chad Brown who hasn’t been missed in markets. He won the Louisiana Derby last start, scoring by a nose.

It was a tough victory, so respect his chances in an even field.
