Lexus Champions Mile Form Guide & Tips
(1) Mr Brightside (Best Bet – $5.00)
We’re putting Mr Brightside on top because this is the time of the year where he performs best. He loves Flemington, being a five-time winner here, and he won’t let Pride of Jenni get away with a soft lead.
His form is excellent this preparation, and there is no reason to bet against him, despite this being one of the tightest Group 1 races in history.
(2) Ceolwulf ($5.50)
A big return to form last time out in Sydney, but he has yet to race at Flemington. It’s a track that gives him time to warm up, but you can’t be 10+ lengths off the speed and expect to win against this field.
That’s a big worry with him and considering the strength of the field vs the odds, we can’t back him in our trifecta. However, he might sneak into the first four.
(3) Pericles (Best Roughie – $15.00)
Not everything went his way last start, so that was a better run than it looked. He hasn’t been beating fields of this class, but he has plenty of upside and is often underrated in betting markets.
$15 is a fair price for a roughie to get up.
(4) Lake Forest ($13.00)
Zac Purton was criticised by the trainer’s wife following its run in Sydney. The horse wasn’t going well enough, and we don’t know how well he’s travelling this time around.
This race could be an afterthought, so we can’t have last year’s Golden Eagle winner in our picks.
(5) Steparty ($67.00)
Likely to be severely outclassed in this company. Looking for something easier at this stage of his career.
(6) Von Hauke ($34.00)
Take nothing away from his win at The Valley. It was a good effort, but the odds tell the story. This is a different kettle of fish, and it would be a huge shock to see him beat this field.
(7) Pride of Jenni ($4.40)
It hurts not putting Pride of Jenni on top after a dominant win last Saturday. She was outstanding, but her pattern is one good run, one bad. We’re hoping that doesn’t continue, as she’s in our picks, but pulling off a win on Saturday won’t be easy.
If they allow her to stride out in slow sectionals, she’ll win, but the jockeys won’t make the same mistake again.
(8) Stefi Magnetica ($9.00)
She is a mare that’s always tough to leave out, but the $9 odds are forcing us to. We priced her at around $16 against this top-level field.
Her win last start came over Gerringong, who would start at around $60 here.
(9) Treasurethe Moment ($5.50)
She might not be winning races since having a setback earlier this spring, but running third in the Cox Plate was a grand effort.
We believe she is ready for her peak effort now, and the $5.50 odds suggest as much. She’s far too talented to leave out, and she adds more intrigue to the race.
(10) Leica Lucy (Best Each Way – $8.00)
She did the donkey work behind Pride of Jenni and still managed to run second. That was a brave effort, and although she needs the right run, she should be right around the finish.
Her best form in New Zealand came when she led. That’s impossible with Jenni in the race, but she’s capable of cutting out good time and holding on.
