Memsie Stakes Runner-By-Runner Guide

Ruling out Mr Brightside would be a huge mistake. He is a six-time winner at Caulfield, and eight of his 20 career wins hav come in wet conditions.

He’ll relish the 1400m test at Caulfield, and the double-figure odds are better than expected for a champion of the turf.

Include him in all Memsie Stakes bets.

Being a former Kiwi runner helps in these conditions, which is why Jimmysstar has been well-backed to win.

He will settle out the back before coming with a big late run, and the market support suggests that’s what will happen on Saturday.

The $5 odds are too short, but we’re not leaving him out of our picks.

He’s a three-time winner fresh up, but he might not be ready to produce the goods here. We’d prefer to see him this time around before following him later this spring.

He’s a Cups horse looking for more ground. The 1400m could turn into a mile with the heavy track, but he’ll be doing his best work late.

The Chris Waller-trained gelding is a head case, but he’s a dangerous type on his day.

He should settle midfield from the draw before launching down the middle of the track, and that should be the place to be.

He’s another runner that we’re not leaving out of our Memsie Stakes predictions.

He ended last campaign with an impressive win, but winning the Memsie Stakes could be too much of an ask fresh up.

We’d prefer to bet on him over longer distances later in the spring.

Unbeaten in two runs at Caulfield this preparation, and he can’t be left out of picks despite the awkward barrier draw.

He’ll need some luck from barrier 11, but if they go quickly up front, he could settle back with Jimmysstar before making their runs together.

The $5 is on the shorter side of value, but he’s a solid win hope.

A proven fresh up winner, but he hasn’t picked an easy race. He’s a lovely type, but we would prefer to back him in something slightly easier.

Waller opted to run him here as opposed to the Winx Stakes last week. That could be a good move, and he has been well-backed since markets opened.

He has yet to finish worse than second on soft tracks, so heavy conditions shouldn’t worry him, and he’s tough enough to figure in the finish.

Punters get each-way odds for Beiwacht, who is another runner that scratched from the hot Winx Stakes last week.

He’s one of the toughest horses in the race, which is why he’s our best each-way. He will grind away gamely in the tough conditions, and we’d be surprised if he didn’t figure in the finish.

Not given much chance to win last time out, but he has since spelled and he should come back in good order.

We don’t think he’s good enough to win the Memsie Stakes, but a big spring campaign is likely.

The defending champion is back, and she’s not being respected in betting markets at $9.

She is a proven fresh-up winner, and she doesn’t mind the conditions. We expect her to settle handy to the speed, and her sustained speed could be too much for them.
