Moonee Valley horse racing tips

Race 1. (18:15) Melba & Me BM70 (1600m)

#1 – No Secret @ $3.30 – Bet @ Picklebet

No Secret comes off an overdue win at The Valley and she’s good enough to kick on with it now.

The five-year-old mare by Niagara won by 3.8 lengths in this grade and rising in weight is the only negative.

We expect her to put away this field for consecutive victories.

Race 2. (18:45) Steamatic C1 Handicap (1600m)

#4 – Diddley Squat @ $4.20 – Bet @ Picklebet

Diddley Squat won on debut at Warrnambool before placing at Sale and we expect that form to hold up well.

The Busuttin/Young-trained son of Mikki Isle was only a nose behind the winner last start and rising to the mile should suit.

His opening odds of $8 have been taken quickly since markets opened.

Race 3. (19:15) Marsh Racing Association BM70 (1600m)

#11 – Watadeel @ $3.50 – Bet @ Picklebet

Speed is with Watadeel, who comes off a Group 3 run at Sandown and he will find this much more to his liking.

The three-year-old gelding ran fourth at Flemington behind Perfect Thought in October and anything close to that run would be good enough.

Barrier 11 isn’t easy around The Valley but he has the class edge and that should take him close.

Race 4. (19:45) Ladbrokes 55 Second Challenge (955m)

#7 – Mutinous @ $4.80 – Bet @ Picklebet

Mutinous owns three wins from his last four starts and it’s hard to bet against the form runner of the field.

The five-year-old son of Rich Enuff won at The Valley last time out by a short margin over 888m and rising to 955m is suitable.

Barrier four should see him ride the speed and kick strongly.

Race 5. (20:15) The Orbit Logistic BM70 (2040m)

#4 – Shock ‘Em Ova @ $4.60 – Bet @ Picklebet

Shock ‘Em Ova won his first two starts, including a win at Moonee Valley, and nothing went right last time out.

The four-year-old gelding scored by a length over 2040m here two back before dropping in distance, so getting back to this distance is ideal.

We think punters get generous odds from bookmakers and the $4.60 could firm significantly on race night.

Race 6. (20:45) The Orbit Logistic BM64 (2500m)

#6 – Freedom Escape @ $7.50 – Bet @ Picklebet

We have backed Freedom Escape a few times this season without success, but we’re not dropping him just yet.

The four-year-old son of Hallowed Crown owns two wins and six placings from 15 starts, including two placings at The Valley.

Barrier 16 doesn’t make it easy but he has time to find cover over 2500m.

Race 7. (21:15) Measure Torney Night Cup (2500m)

#1 – Persan @ $3.60 – Bet @ Picklebet

Persan is a Melbourne Cup-performed runner and that class can’t be overlooked in this race.

The Maher/Eustace-trained gelding owns eight wins and 11 placings from 37 starts, so he’s never too far away and he hasn’t missed a win or placing on the track.

Carrying 60kg over this distance isn’t easy but his class takes him close.

Race 8. (21:45) The Ranvet Valley Summer BM64 (1200m)

#11 – Pretty Tavi @ $3.30 – Bet @ Picklebet

Pretty Tavi showed speed when winning on debut at Mornington by 4.3 lengths and a repeat of that is good enough.

The three-year-old filly then ran ninth at The Valley on a heavy surface, but she didn’t handle the conditions.

She comes off a trial win and it came easily, so she’s ready to fire.
