Moonee Valley horse racing tips
Race 1. (11:40) Strathmore Bendigo Bank (955m)
#2 – Ancestry @ $1.60 – Bet @ Sportsbet
Ancestry is coming off an impressive win at Cranbourne, which followed a terrific win at Caulfield earlier this season.
The Phillip Stokes-trained gelding is firing on all cylinders and although punters have to take short odds, he could justify them.
Moonee Valley suits and he only needs early cover to win.
Race 2. (14:10) Inglis Banner (1000m)
#7 – Son of Mercury @ $6.50 – Bet @ Sportsbet
The Maher/Eustace-trained debutante was a $250,000 purchase and it wasn’t given a hard time in a recent jumpout.
He is a well-bred colt by Street Boss and after opening at $7, punters have come for the promising type.
Expect his odds to stay steady throughout the week.
Race 3. (14:40) PFD Food Services Red Anchor Stakes (1200m)
#5 – Portland Sky @ $2.90 – Bet @ Sportsbet
Portland Sky didn’t have much luck at Caulfield two starts back before finishing fourth behind September Run last start.
The talented three-year-old colt scored a win on debut at Ballarat and he deserves to get back to winning form.
$2.90 is a fair price from bookmakers.
Race 4. (15:10) Lexus Fillies Classic (1600m)
#1 – Thermosphere @ $4 – Bet @ Sportsbet
Thermosphere wasn’t too far behind them in the Thousand Guineas and she is dropping in class for this race.
The James Cummings-trained filly looked better when winning at Flemington two starts ago, and we’re expecting that form to stack up nicely.
Punters get value odds and they are worth taking.
Race 5. (15:40) Powerflo Solution Stakes (1600m)
#3 – Sovereign Award @ $3.50 – Bet @ Sportsbet
Sovereign Award is gunning for three consecutive wins and we wouldn’t put it past the in-form mare.
The Danny O’Brien-trained five-year-old now owns seven wins from 15 starts and the consistent mare should go close again.
Drawing barrier six is ideal and she has three wins at The Valley.
Race 6. (16:15) Drummond Golf Vase (2040m)
#6 – Young Werther @ $2.30 – Bet @ Sportsbet
Young Werther had little luck at Flemington last start but the rise in distance looks ideal for this Victoria Derby favourite.
The O’Brien-trained son of Tavistock looked the goods when winning on debut and he was hitting the line hard last time out.
He is a nice type and we are not surprised by the betting support.
Race 7. (16:50) Schweppes Crystal Mile (1600m)
#4 – Olmedo @ $6.50 – Bet @ Sportsbet
Olmedo is a Chris Waller-trained import that didn’t fire in his Australian debut, but that came on a tough track.
The son of Declaration of War is a three-time winner overall, and with almost $1 million in the bank, he has faced tough fields throughout his career.
His recent trial form has been solid enough to consider at the each-way odds.
Race 8. (17:30) McCafe Moonee Valley Gold Cup (2500m)
#7 – Sound @ $6.50 – Bet @ Sportsbet
Sound is getting close to a win after back-to-back second placings. The Mike Moroney-trained runner is preparing for the cups races and winning this race will take him a long way.
Carrying 55kg is ideal and given his recent form, we’re confident the eight-year-old can turn back time and score an elusive win.
Race 10. (18:50) Ladbrokes Crockett Stakes (1200m)
#8 – La Mexicana @ $5 – Bet @ Sportsbet
The Freedman-trained three-year-old is coming off an impressive win at Cranbourne and Moonee Valley is a similar surface.
She scored by 4.3 lengths and she deserves her chance to win at stakes level. Her effort prior came behind Celestine, and that form bodes well for this race.
$5 is worth taking before it shortens.
