Otaki Maori Classic Form Guide & Tips
(1) Waitak (Best Each Way – $7.00)
The pace of the race didn’t help Waitak last time out, and the champion sprinter-miler should bounce back with a big effort.
He’s a proven Group 1 winner, and we’re surprised by the odds. If there is pace up front, which there should be, he could sprout wings and finish over the top of them.
(2) El Vencedor ($8.00)
The seven-year-old is a champion, and he was NZ’s best horse last year. However, his recent form is concerning, and it’s tough to back him.
He tends to settle on the speed and give the opposition no chance in the straight, but he’s lacking his turn-of-foot.
The $8 is a touch short of where we priced him, but he could run as a first four hope.
(3) Sterling Express (Best Roughie – $11.00)
Horribly unlucky in the Waikato Sprint last time out behind First Five. He saw roadblocks over the last 200m, and we love the way he found the line for second.
A repeat of that effort is needed to beat this field, but he’s running well, and punters get double-figure odds to enjoy.
(4) Pier (Best Bet – $3.40)
We were disappointed with his performance at Group 1 level behind First Five, but he’s worth sticking with.
His form in Australia was excellent, and although he’s not the luckiest horse going around, he deserves another Group 1 win.
Look for him to settle handy and kick well down the Ellerslie straight.
(5) Tuxedo ($4.00)
A winner of the Aotearoa Classic last start when beating a tidy field. It was a good effort, and Opie Bosson rides, but we didn’t price him at $4.
We thought he would be at longer odds to win the Otaki Māori Classic, and although we’re not leaving him out, his odds could drift on race day.
(6) Belles Beau ($23.00)
She tends to need a heavy track to show her best, and she needs to find 3-4 lengths to be competitive.
(7) Provence ($11.00)
A proven Group 1 mare, but she needs to improve on her last two efforts. They were disappointing, especially after winning so well three back.
It pains us to leave her out at double-figure odds, but we need to see improvement first.
(8) Jaarffi ($23.00)
She had good betting support when running seventh last start, when we thought she was well under the odds.
Based on that run, we can’t include her in our picks this week.
(9) Qali Al Farrasha ($10.00)
The five-year-old is only a three-time winner, and although the talent is there, the consistency is lacking.
It makes her tough to include, especially at this level, and there is better value elsewhere in this race.
(10) Queen Zou ($16.00)
She comes off a fifth at Group 2 level at Trentham, which followed a good win at Ellerslie. However, she might be a level below this field.
She isn’t well-weighted at 57kg, so look towards other runners for better value.
(11) Electron ($51.00)
The underdog in the race and rightfully so. We can’t see her coming close to winning.
