Pakenham racing tips
—
Tarvue comes off a strong win over 2460m last start when beating unbeaten jumper The Cunning Fox, and it’s only the drop in distance that worries.
The John Saddler-trained mare owns three wins from 10 starts, and she’s good enough to win over 2000m against this field.
She won over 1600m earlier this prep, which is a good form guide.
Stake: 1 Unit
Rumble Town has the benefit of race day experience, and he showed good improvement when running fourth at Pakenham last start.
The two-year-old son of Microphone wasn’t far behind Maldini, and we expect that form to hold up well, as do bookmakers.
He’s respected at $5, which is a good sign.
Stake: 1 Unit
Rushford is punished for recent wins with 69kg, but he’s good enough to win the Picnic Grand Final.
The nine-year-old owns eight wins and 14 placings from 60 starts, and he owns a placing from two attempts at Pakenham.
His odds are shortening, so we’re happy to include him in picks.
Stake: 2 Units
Thinking Gold ended last preparation with three consecutive placings, and there’s no reason why he can’t win fresh up on Thursday.
The three-year-old son of So You Think was only a length behind them last start at Seymour as a $1.70 chance, so $5.50 is generous.
He’s good enough to beat the odds-on favourite.
Stake: 1.5 Units
Punters get value odds for Marbastion, who owns three placings from seven career starts.
The four-year-old has enough pace to win over 1400m fresh up, and he could be the forgotten runner at double-figure odds.
His fresh up form is better than it reads, so he’s worth the risk at the price.
Stake: 1 Unit
Betting support is with El Fortress, who didn’t have much luck when resuming at Bendigo behind Simply Just.
He got caught behind runners before only getting out late, and getting the inside draw could see him settle on the speed and kick strongly.
Getting Blake Shinn in the saddle could make all the difference.
Stake: 2.5 Units
Looking to remain unbeaten is No Fooling, who won by just under a length at Cranbourne on debut in April.
The three-year-old son of Alabama Express will need luck from a wide barrier, but he’s good enough to find cover and finish over the top.
We’re happy to include him in our horse racing picks.
Stake: 1 Unit
We’re sticking with Roadcone, who has been costly to follow, but he keeps getting back and hitting the line with authority.
Luck hasn’t been on his side, but the four-year-old can beat this field, and he won his only start at Pakenham last campaign.
It’s another good ride for Shinn, who could have a big evening.
Stake: 2.5 Units
Cora Lynn had good success during her last preparation, including a win at Warrnambool before placing at Moonee Valley.
The Ciaron Maher-trained filly ran second at her only fresh up attempt, and there are no starts in this field, so she could take advantage.
Take the each-way odds in the final race.
