Preakness Stakes Form Guide & Tips
(1) Mugatu ($101.00)
He’s only a one-time winner from 12 starts, hence the massive odds. We can’t see him figuring in the finish.
It’s only a small field but he would need to find a few lengths just to be competitive.
(2) Uncle Heavy (Best Roughie – $26.00)
He wasn’t too far away from the mark when fifth last time out, which followed consecutive wins.
Punters get better odds than we expected, and we’re happy to include him in selections at the value odds.
(3) Catching Freedom ($7.00)
That was a huge run for fourth in the Kentucky Derby when he made good ground in the straight.
The distance of the Preakness Stakes might not help his cause, but the jockey should settle closer this time around.
Punters get each-way odds to snap up, and they’re worth taking.
(4) Muth (Best Bet – $2.25)
Muth couldn’t run in the Kentucky Derby due to the ban of trainer Bob Baffert, but he might have won it.
The Preakness Stakes favourite owns four wins and two placings from six starts, including a win in the Arkansas Derby.
That’s a great effort, and we’re happy to take the odds. He’s at even-money with American bookmakers, so take the value.
(5) Mystik Dan (Best Each Way – $5.50)
The Kentucky Derby winner received an excellent ride to win, but take nothing away from the performance.
It was a great effort along the inside of runners, and he’s our clear best bet behind Muth.
If it rains his chances increases, but the Triple Crown could be on the table following Sunday’s race.
(6) Seize the Grey ($21.00)
Seize the Grey won on the Kentucky Derby undercard, which is an unusual prep race for the Preakness Stakes.
The son of Arrogate has ability, and he could enter first four calculations with a good effort.
(7) Just Steel ($17.00)
Having 12 starts under his belt could help his cause, but there are some stellar types in this field.
He could struggle to beat many of them, so we would want better odds than $17.00 to entertain his chances.
(8) Tuscan Gold ($7.50)
He finished third in the Louisiana Derby, which was his first career start.
That’s not a bad form guide and there has been solid money coming for it, so we’re happy to include him in first four picks.
(9) Imagination ($7.50)
Imagination comes from the Baffert stable, and he’s a solid second stable selection.
He was only a head behind the winner in the Santa Anita Derby, and that’s usually the best form guide for this race.
We’re also happy to include him in selections.
