2018 Queensland Derby Form Guide & Tips
Dark Dream (Best Bet – $5) – BET NOW
He pulled up with a slight issue last start but trainer Kerry Parker is extremely confident with the three-year-old.
The son of All American was a big four-length winner at Doomben prior to running third last start as the $1.73 favourite.
Punters are getting better value this time around and the odds are too good to pass up.
Heavenly Thought ($5.50) – BET NOW
Big money has come for the Darren Weir-trained colt, which opened at $8 and is now into $6.
He scored a narrow win on this track last start when beating a talented field and the Victorian form is starting to stack up nicely.
He’s shooting for three-straight wins and the inside draw will allow him to settle nicely throughout.
Mahamedeis ($21) – BET NOW
Wasn’t too far away from the winner last start but we’re not sure he has the ability to get any closer.
Drawing barrier 20 could see him encountering problems and we’d prefer to back him in something slightly easier.
Rezealient ($35) – BET NOW
Knocking on the door after running second behind Leicester in the South Australian Derby last start.
That should be a good form guide for this and if he wasn’t drawn so wide, his odds might be considerably shorter.
California Turbo ($34) – BET NOW
Ran over 10 lengths behind Heavenly Thought last start and he was well-held throughout the run.
Run prior came behind Dark Dream and he would need to find a couple of lengths to run in the first half of the field.
Live And Free ($6) – BET NOW
Drifting in the market which is a touch surprising given his recent form.
The John O’Shea-trained son of Savabeel scored a booming 3.3-length win at Rosehill before rising up in distance when winning at Randwick by over a length.
The drift from $4.80 to $5.50 is concerning but with James McDonald in the saddle, punters shouldn’t be overlooking his winning chances.
Han Xin (Best Roughie – $16) – BET NOW
Could cause the upset at odds after running gamely behind Heavenly Thought last time out at Doomben.
The Waterhouse/Bott-trained runner will likely go forward and set a good tempo, but he has the ability to give a good kick in the straight.
If he gets some soft sectionals down the back, expect a good finish.
Won Won Too ($71) – BET NOW
Nice win at Caulfield three starts back but he hasn’t been able to replicate that form since.
Looks a touch one-paced and he would need to improve to figure in the placings.
Almighty Crown ($61) – BET NOW
Showed nothing in the Grand Prix last start and that should be one of the better form guides of this race.
A win would surprise at odds.
Lucky For All (Best Each Way – $6) – BET NOW
Received a horrible ride from apprentice Ethan Brown last start when he was hard-held to the line.
Take nothing away from the horse as he had no room to move and his form prior included three consecutive wins which came with ease.
He’s a real rising stayer and although the wide draw has deterred some punters, he will get back and run home strongly.
Merovee ($26) – BET NOW
Expensive colt by Frankel out of More Strawberries which is desperate for some black type.
This distance could bring it into contention but we haven’t seen enough to warrant tipping the three-year-old.
Augustus ($35) – BET NOW
Scored a narrow win at Canterbury last start but that form is unlikely to stack up well here.
Back in something much easier.
Banner Season ($20) – BET NOW
5.8-length winner at Newcastle two starts back and he backed that up with a nose winner at Ipswich.
Needed to win his last race by a bigger margin to be considered a winning chance but he has place claims.
Turnberry ($81) – BET NOW
Has consistent form behind some nice types this preparation and it could again run just in behind the placings.
Better than the $81 on offer.
Youngstar ($8.50) – BET NOW
Queensland Oaks winner which is looking to become the first Oaks/Derby winner in 25 years.
History isn’t in her favour but she showed good heart when winning last time out and it would take a brave punter to leave her out of calculations.
Include in first-four options.
Captivator ($91) – BET NOW
Scored by only a nose last start at Ipswich and that form shouldn’t be a good form guide for this.
Ombudsman ($31) – BET NOW
Looks to have potential but not at this stage. 1.3 lengths behind Live And Free last start and it could run into the money with some luck in running.
Destiny’s Hero – $51
Surprise Bullet – $51
Bart – $101
