2018 Railway Stakes form guide and tips
Material Man ($12) – BET NOW
The seven-year-old has four consecutive wins coming into this and the 14-time winner overall should be considered as an outside chance.
He has won over $1.3 million and although his best performances haven’t come at Group 1 level, he’s the top weight for a reason and deserves some attention.
Great Shot ($17) – BET NOW
Third behind Gatting in the Group 2 Lee Steere Stakes last start but it’s tough to see him bridging that gap here.
He has won some big races in the past and will be suited by carrying only 55.5kg, but drawing wide hurts and he’s going to need to produce his career best to take this out.
Man Booker ($14) – BET NOW
Disappointed a touch last start after getting every chance in the straight. The six-year-old has won 10 of his 21 starts and it’s tough to overlook that record but he would need to find a length to win this.
He has struggled at this level and drawing barrier 11 is going to make it that much harder to cross the field and lead.
Gatting (Best Each Way – $13) – BET NOW
Comes into this race with a win in the Lee Steere Stakes, beating some runners in this field and that form should take him a long way here.
The five-year-old gets the inside draw to work from and only 54kg on his back. He likes to fight in the straight and given the competitiveness of this race, that should work into his favour.
Having quality rider Damian Lane in the saddle only helps his chances.
Prized Icon ($13) – BET NOW
Former Derby winner which incredibly has won only three of his 32 starts, but poses a threat at nice odds.
Trained by Kris Lees, the five-year-old finished 2.2 lengths behind Trap For Fools in the Group 1 MacKinnon Stakes last start and that form needs to be considered here.
Doesn’t win often so is tough to back for the win but place claims appeal.
Mister Sea Wolf ($16) – BET NOW
Not the worst chance in this and he could benefit from what should be an electric speed up front. The Waller-trained runner finished 12th last start, which was a disappointing effort but he’s better than that.
He won a good race at Hawkesbury earlier this preparation and his chances shouldn’t be overlooked.
Peaceful State (Best Each Way – $5) – BET NOW
Demands respect at the weights (53.5kg) and he’s coming off a third placing in the Group 1 Kennedy Mile.
Darren Weir lines up the four-year-old which hasn’t won since scoring at Morphettville in May, but has numerous group-level placings behind the likes of Land of Plenty and Best of Days. That’s going to stack up well for this and he’s a big danger to the favourite.
Achernar Star ($17) – BET NOW
Finished second behind Gatting last start and that form looks solid for this but he’s relatively inexperienced compared to the rest of this field.
The four-time winner from 14 starts might need to find a length or two to win but he could run into the first five.
Action ($14) – BET NOW
Tough to rule any runner out from the Williams’ stable and Action has a nice career ahead of him.
He’s a three-time winner which didn’t run well as the favourite last start and he might need something slightly easier than this.
Disposition ($81) – BET NOW
Seven-year-old which has some notable wins to his name but recent form has been anything but impressive.
53kg helps but he looks well-held in this.
Galaxy Star (Best Bet – $3.30) – BET NOW
Smart mare which returned to form when winning the Asian Beau Stakes last start at Ascot. That came after she ran second fresh up behind Man Booker but she needed the run.
Her record of nine wins from 12 starts is impressive and she has a turn-of-foot needed to win at Group 1 level. She’s not ideally suited at the weights with 53kg on her back but it’s still a light weight and she should get every chance from barrier two.
$3.30 could firm into $3 come start time.
Iconoclasm ($9.50) – BET NOW
Has the potential to cause a minor upset if he gets the right run in transit. He’s a seven-time winner from 13 starts which ran only 2.7 lengths behind them in the Kennedy Mile.
His form prior included consecutive wins at Caulfield and Moonee Valley. He likes to land close to the pace and kick strongly, so if they go slow up front, expect Iconoclasm to be right in the thick of the action.
Perfect Jewel ($31) – BET NOW
Looked handy as a juvenile when winning four of her first five starts but that form has taken a hit since. She finished last of eight runners behind Gatting last start and she has seemingly lost interest at this level.
Star Exhibit ($71) – BET NOW
Hasn’t shown his best form in quite some time and running in the first half of the field would be a good run.
Looks held and the bookmakers aren’t interested in his chances.
Wrinkly ($126) – BET NOW
Knows how to win but winning a Group 1 would be a stretch. Triple-figure odds on offer and rightfully so.
