Race 1. (12:25) Tab Highway Handicap C3 (1200m)
#4 – Steplee – Bet @ Sportsbet
The four-year-old is searching for three consecutive wins after scoring at Scone and Muswellbrook.
He won by 3.5 lengths on a heavy track two back before scoring by 1.5 lengths as a short-priced favourite.
Having James McDonald in the saddle is a bonus and he only needs luck from the tricky barrier.
Race 2. (13:00) Fujitsu General BM72 (1500m)
#6 – Sword Point @ $4 – Bet @ Sportsbet
Sword Point stretched out nicely to score by 3.3 lengths at Canterbury last start and he could go back-to-back.
The Chris Waller-trained three-year-old was far too good for them and he has been solidly backed in early markets, which is a good sign.
Carrying 54.5kg is ideal, so put him on top.
Race 3. (13:35) Precise Air BM78 (1500m)
#5 – Sur La Mer – Bet @ Sportsbet
Sur La Mer owns two wins and five placings from 10 starts, so she’s never too far away from the prize.
The Waller-trained daughter of Nicconi hit the line nicely for second behind Toomuchtobear at Randwick, which is an excellent form guide.
Getting the inside barrier helps and punters should be confident of a big effort.
Race 4. (14:10) Midway BM72 (1400m)
#1 – Holy Reign – Bet @ Sportsbet
Holy Reign can’t be discounted as a six-time winner, so we’re putting him on top after a solid fresh up effort.
The Kim Waugh-trained gelding was only 1.2 lengths behind some smart types as a $21 chance, but he’ll be much shorter this time around.
His best form comes with a run under his belt.
Race 5. (14:45) Petaluma BM88 (1400m)
#5 – Yiyi – Bet @ Sportsbet
Yiyi is unbeaten at Rosehill and the four-year-old also owns two fresh up wins, so that bodes well.
The Waller-trained is already a five-time winner from 15 starts, so he has been an excellent runner for connections and punters.
His stablemates might have more betting support, but we’re going with Yiyi to produce the goods.
Race 6. (15:20) ACY Securities BM72 (1100m)
#1 – Rule of Law – Bet @ Sportsbet
Rule of Law is seeking back-to-back wins after dominating last time out. The Bjorn Baker-trained gelding won by three lengths, so he’s classy.
He is a son of Snitzel who owns four wins from eight starts and three have come over the short-course distance.
He gets 2kg off his back to help with the big weight, so include in selections.
Race 7. (16:00) Ranvet BM78 (1500m)
#6 – Loveplanet – Bet @ Sportsbet
We were happy with the run of Loveplanet fresh up. The son of Ocean Park didn’t get much luck and rising in distance is right up his alley.
The four-year-old was only 1.9 lengths behind Animate over 1200 and now he steps up to his preferred distance.
He’s a smart type who can’t be overlooked.
Race 8. (16:40) XXXX January Cup (2000m)
#14 – Lord Ardmore @ $3.70 – Bet @ Sportsbet
The former Kiwi has made a good living in Australia with two wins and two second placings.
Formerly with Stephen McKee, the four-year-old ran a nose behind Huetor last start, which is an excellent form guide.
Barrier 14 won’t worry him and he has handled dry tracks in the past.
Race 9. (17:20) Chandon BM78 (1800m)
#6 – Niffler @ $3.80 – Bet @ Sportsbet
Niffler was only beaten narrowly at Randwick last start, which was her first defeat in four starts.
The Waller-trained daughter of Tavistock has room for improvement and we’re happy to back her at the each-way price.
Barrier two with 55kg and James McDonald on her back could make the difference.
Race 10. (18:00) Rosehill Bowling Club BM88 (1200m)
#8 – Starla @ $9.50 – Bet @ Sportsbet
Starla did enough when running fourth fresh up at Randwick and she could close the gap on Tycoonist.
The five-year-old daughter of Snitzel has figured in the placings in 19 of her 33 starts and she runs her best races on this track.
Barrier 12 isn’t easy, but Hugh Bowman rides.
