Russell Balding Stakes Form Guide & Tips
(1) Briasa ($7.00)
Not everything went right for him in The Everest, and that’s the best form guide for this race. Barrier six is ideal, and punters get each-way odds to snap up.
He should be right around the mark in what could be a hectic finish.
(2) Jimmysstar (Best Bet – $2.80)
His run in The Everest was excellent, which is why he’s the favourite to win the Russell Balding Stakes. He’s the worth favourite, and he deserves a big win this season.
We expect him to settle back, and rising from 1200m to 1300m should suit him better than most sprinters in this race.
(3) War Machine ($8.50)
Another Everest runner who didn’t get every chance in the run. That race might have come a little too early in his career, but he can’t be overlooked here.
He’s a Group 1 winner, so we can’t leave him out of our first four picks.
(4) Private Eye ($9.50)
He got back to winning form against an easier field last start. His confidence levels are up, and sitting handier to the pace has switched him on.
However, at this stage of his career, he might have to settle for a placing. Good enough to figure in trifecta and first four bets.
(5) Rothfire ($23.00)
He showed that there is still life in his legs when winning last start. That was a big form turnaround, and it would be an even bigger achievement to win this race.
We can’t see him repeating that effort.
(6) Iowna Merc ($35.00)
He comes off a tidy second placing, but we don’t expect that form to measure up here. We would prefer to back him in something easier.
(7) Strauss (Best Roughie – $26.00)
Overseas runners often run well at this meeting, and Strauss is the one for this race. The Japanese runner has been given a wide barrier, but if he gets luck in running, he’s strong enough to take it out.
His last-start third placing was good, and getting $23 for an international sprinter is a fair price.
(8) Waterford ($151.00)
An upset winner two back before failing to fire last start. Can’t see him running well enough to win.
(9) Golden Mile ($18.00)
He is struggling to show his best form, and it would be a massive reversal to win this race. Unlikely to happen.
(10) Jedibeel ($67.00)
A surprise selection in The Everest and he ran accordingly. It was a tight finish, but he didn’t do enough to warrant attention here.
(11) Airman ($41.00)
Barrier 17 doesn’t make it easy for Airman, who could be gasping for air at the end of this race.
(12) Lady Shenandoah (Best Each Way – $6.00)
Not everything went her way in The Everest, which is a common theme. She owns an electric turn-of-foot, so drawing barrier 13 isn’t the worst.
It’s good to see James McDonald back on board, and that could make all the difference. $6.50 is a good price for a runner of her ability.
(13) Mazu ($27.00)
He would come into calculations if the heavens opened. However, he’s unlikely to threaten them in the Russell Balding Stakes.
(14) With Your Blessing ($26.00)
Slightly lower odds than expected. A consistent type, but he’s not often running against this level of opposition.
(15) Coal Crusher ($51.00)
He will be sent forward and look to run them into the ground. However, he will likely drift through the field in the straight.
(16) Amor Victorious ($101.00)
Big odds and rightfully so. An ambitious fresh up target.
(17) Caballus ($26.00)
A length behind Rothfire in the Sydney Stakes. Specked at odds, but this would be a big improvement.
(18) Felix Majestic ($201.00)
Looking for something much easier after flopping last start.
(19) Phearson ($151.00)
He won’t be threatening them at big odds.
