T.J. Smith Stakes Form Guide & Tips

1. Nature Strip (Best Bet – $3.60) Bet Now

The five-year-old is one of the world’s best sprinters, but he’s enigmatic at the best of times.

His three-length win last time out showed punters what he can do, but prior to that he looked average down the Flemington straight.

The 1200m is the extent of his range but off the inside draw, he’s the top pick.

2. Pierata ($9) Bet Now

It was a fair fresh-up effort from Pierata last start and he could show immediate improvement.

The nine-time winner typically gets going around this time of the year and despite drifting in the market, he’s a runners’ chance.

3. Santa Ana Lane ($6) Bet Now

It wasn’t long ago when Santa Ana Lane would have been the favourite for this race. Punters are getting good value for the 10-time winner, which has won more than $7.4 million.

It’s tough to look past that class, but he has been getting slightly too far back in his races. If he settles closer, he should be fighting out the finish.

4. Redzel (Best Roughie – $18) Bet Now

Punters can never discount the dual-Everest winner. He hasn’t been winning as frequently as he used to, but never rule out class.

He has drawn nicely in barrier three and nine of his 15 career wins have come at Randwick. He should go into calculations and punters are getting great odds.

5. Trekking ($21) Bet Now

Trekking has shown form fresh up in the past and he’s good enough to cause an upset in the TJ Smith Stakes.

The James Cummings-trained gelding scored a trial win at Randwick to prepare for this race, so he’s ticking over nicely and he should go well.

6. Vegadaze ($81) Bet Now

Generous odds on offer for a last-start winner that looked good last week. He faces a steep rise in class, but his confidence is up.

Jockey Adam Hyeronimus is also confident after winning his first Group 1, so we have seen worse $81 chances.

7. Bivouac (Best Each Way – $5) Bet Now

The three-year-old colt was beaten last start but he didn’t enjoy being in front. He’s better when ridden with cover, so he can show his electric turn-of-foot.

Conditions look ideal for the son of Exceed and Excel, which owns seven starts on rain-affected ground for four wins and three placings.

The $5 is a good quote from bookmakers.

8. In Her Time ($34) Bet Now

In Her Time doesn’t win as often as we would have liked, so we can’t recommend her as a winning chance.

She didn’t show much at Rosehill last start and she would need to turn her form around considerably.

9. Exceedance ($13) Bet Now

Exceedance hasn’t fired in two runs back from a spell, and the 1200m could be short of his best.

The three-year-old colt looked good during his previous campaign, which included a Group 1 win.

He could fire here and punters are getting value odds.

10. Tofane ($34) Bet Now

She showed improvement last time out but he could get run off his feet here. Opie Bosson rides but that’s about where the positives end.

11. White Moss ($151) Bet Now

Good on connections for having a go, but she’s not going to come close to beating this field.

Bookmakers have assessed her odds correctly.

12. Standout ($34) Bet Now

Standout was disappointing last start but he has won a trial at Warwick Farm by two lengths to prepare for this race.

We’re not sure he can sprint well enough to beat this field, but he’s a nice type for the future and he shouldn’t be completely left out of calculations.

13. Loving Gaby ($6.50) Bet Now

The star 3yo filly is coming in hot after a dominant win in the William Ried Stakes and she has not missed a place in her last nine starts.

She’s drawn the widest barrier and will likely settle a little further off speed this time but watch out for her late. Her form is too good to leave out of top four contention and she is a solid each way bet and a genuine winning chance.
