Thursday horse racing tips
Race 1. (12:15) Toohey’s Maiden Handicap (1200m)
#1 – Nickelback @ $2.10 – Bet @ Ladbrokes
Nickelback comes off back-to-back second placings at Canterbury and Wyong, so he’s ready to break through.
The Hawkes-trained three-year-old was a short margin behind the winner last start and drawing barrier two should see him figure in the finish.
$2.10 is a good price and he could start as the odds-on favourite.
Race 2. (12:50) C Coast Cleaning Construction C1 (1600m)
#2 – Dirty Merchant @ $2.50 – Bet @ Ladbrokes
Dirty Merchant showed a fine turn-of-foot when scoring at Newcastle last start and he’s well-favoured to score again.
The two-year-old colt by Merchant Navy is bred to be better than average and we like his chances of rising through the grades.
Barrier two is ideal and his odds could firm on race day.
Race 4. (14:05) Eris McCarthy Electrical Maiden (1100m)
#1 – Cosmic Minerva @ $5 – Bet @ Ladbrokes
The three-year-old son of Deep Field won a trial at Rosehill to prepare for this and he could make a winning debut.
He scored by a half-length and runners from the Bjorn Baker stables often make positive debuts, which is why there is solid betting support.
Getting $5 is a good price and we think that shortens.
Race 6. (15:15) Whiteys Rite Price Tyres C1 (1200m)
#8 – Fairey Barracuda @ $3.90 – Bet @ Ladbrokes
The Kris Lees-trained mare is shooting for consecutive wins after scoring at Gosford and we fancy her chances.
She won by 2.5 lengths as a $1.95 favourite last start and that form looks good going forward. Punters are also getting better odds, so she’s a value runner.
Bowman rides and we don’t think her odds will get much higher than $3.90.
Race 2. (13:00) Ladbrokes Mates Mode Maiden (1200m)
#6 – Pacific Ruby @ $2.15 – Bet @ Ladbrokes
Pacific Ruby changed stables and heading to the Maher/Eustace stable won’t do her chances any harm.
The three-year-old daughter of Kermadec showed enough ability during her first campaign to warrant attention, including runs at Moonee Valley and Caulfield.
This is a much easier task and getting the inside draw is ideal.
Race 4. (14:00) TM&H Mitre 10 Maiden (1100m)
#5 – Maranzano @ $4.50 – Bet @ Ladbrokes
Maranzano showed ability during his first campaign and it shouldn’t take him long to get off the mark.
The Lloyd Kennewell-trained son of Capitalist ran fifth on debut at Bendigo before running sixth at Flemington in a harder race.
There has been enough betting support to suggest he’s running well enough to beat them.
Race 7. (15:30) Bottlemart Moe C1 Handicap (1000m)
#3 – Irememberwhen @ $2.60 – Bet @ Ladbrokes
Patrick Payne lines up the three-year-old gelding who won easily on debut and he could remain unbeaten on Thursday.
The son of Akeed Mofeed scored by two lengths at Mildura and he has been freshened up with a trial at Tatura, so he looks ready to go.
We’re not surprised by the weight of money coming for the favourite and it could pay to watch late betting moves.
Race 9. (16:30) Xmas in July Raceday BM64 (1600m)
#10 – House Spouse @ $4 – Bet @ Ladbrokes
House Spouse is getting close to recording his second win after placing at Sale last time out behind High Done.
The form out of that contest stacks up nicely and he’s another well-backed runner from the Payne stable, which could have a big day.
Barrier 16 is ideal and the each-way odds are worth taking.
