Victoria Derby Form Guide & Tips
(1) Observer ($2.05)
Clearly one of the horses to beat in the Victoria Derby after cruising home to win at The Valley last week. It was a stylish victory, but the $2.05 isn’t a good price.
We’re not leaving him out of our picks, but we have opted for better value, and we believe our top pick is better suited to the Derby distance.
(2) Highvol ($23.00)
Battled gamely in the Geelong Classic, and it wasn’t a bad form guide for this race. We’re happy to include him in first four picks, and he’s talented at his best.
(3) Autumn Mystery ($17.00)
Dug deep to score last start, making it consecutive wins. Drawn wide, but he has time to find cover, and he could sneak under the radar.
It’s a tough Derby field, but Blake Shinn rides, and Autumn Mystery hasn’t done much wrong throughout his career.
(4) Miewa ($19.00)
Second behind Autumn Mystery last start, but he didn’t get all favours in the run. We thought his run was better than the winners, so we’re taking the odds.
He almost went in as the best roughie, so snap up the $19 odds.
(5) Options (Best Bet – $16.00)
We can’t quite believe the odds. He had no luck behind Observer at The Valley, which is a track that was never going to suit him.
He got back and run into trouble around the home turn, but it was a lovely Derby trial, and bookmakers have forgotten about him.
We expect him to get back and work into the race around the home turn, and his finish is sustained and impressive.
(6) Providence (Best Each Way – $6.50)
Hit the line solidly enough behind Observer at Moonee Valley. The margin wasn’t accurate, as Observer was severely eased down. However, it was a good hit out before the Victoria Derby.
He is another solid each-way chance in one of the more open Derby races in recent history.
(7) Azazel (Best Roughie – $23.00)
We rate the Geelong Classic form this year, and it was a tough victory for Azazel. He’s bred to be handy over this distance, and he could be another underrated runner.
Given the $23 odds, we’re not leaving him out.
(8) Arcora ($61.00)
A winner earlier this prep, but his form since has been only fair. He’s likely to struggle in the main event.
(9) O’Sheamus ($18.00)
A first four chance following a good third in one of the better form races. We liked the way he hit the line, and he adds more depth to this field.
(10) Amazake ($46.00)
A better effort for third last time out, but we can’t recommend him here. He would need to find a few lengths on that effort.
(11) Engine of War ($21.00)
Extremely disappointing last start after looking like a Derby contender at one stage. The former Kiwi runner is an unknown now, and we’re not taking the risk.
(12) Matsuda ($46.00)
Still in his first preparation, and he looked like a tired horse last start. Not fancied at the odds.
(13) One Step Closer ($46.00)
We love a bit of Linkin Park, but we don’t love his chances of winning the Victory Derby. Looks better suited to something easier next autumn.
(14) Savisanta ($21.00)
Yet to win a race, but he has been consistent with four placings. Waller could work his magic, so he’s a first four chance if you have room for another.
(15) McWoody ($67.00)
A nice debut winner before running fifth last time out. Might not measure up to the stress of this race so early in his career.
(16) Deal Done Fast ($41.00)
Yet to win a race and we can’t see that changing on Saturday.
(17) Arabian Prince ($31.00)
Specked at odds, which could be the Craig Williams factor. Only fair efforts to date, so we’re not interested.
(18) Freddie Bassett ($67.00)
Not firing on all cylinders this campaign, so he’s not entering our calculations.
(19) Crack a Deel ($201.00)
Last week was meant to be a Derby guide, and he ran poorly. Surprised he’s in the field.
(20) Super Paradise ($251.00)
A win would surprise most punters.
