The Victoria Oaks is the staying test for fillies in Australia and this year 12 of the best are on show at Flemington.
Oaks day is the third day of the Melbourne Cup carnival and it’s one of the most popular betting races – and most certainly the most popular race held on a Thursday.
The market is currently being dominated by one runner, but the Oaks is never a foregone conclusion, no matter what the odds suggest.

Victoria Oaks 2017 form guide and tips
Aloisia (Best Bet – $1.55) – BET NOW
We didn’t want to label the $1.55 chance as our best bet, but she’s the best filly in the race and she should be winning the Oaks.
We’ll be the first to admit that taking $1.55 odds in the Oaks has been a recipe for disaster over the last few years, but Aloisia could be one of the best staying fillies Australia has seen in some years.
Aaron Purcell lines up the daughter of Azamour which defeated Shoals by over a length in the Thousand Guineas before putting away a good field at Moonee Valley last start by 3.5 lengths.
It was the manner of which she won that suggests the 2500m shouldn’t be an issue and this race could be over being they approach the turn.
Luvaluva ($7) – BET NOW
Trainer John Sargent knows what it takes to win the Oaks, he did it with Kirramosa, and Luvaluva looks a good chance.
The Mastercraftsman filly won the Wakeful Stakes last Saturday with a powerful finish at Flemington and that form should stack up well this Thursday.
She wasn’t the most impressive filly earlier this season, but she’s improved significantly over the staying distances and there has been good each way money for her.
Bring Me Roses ($21) – BET NOW
Bring Me Roses was the second favourite for the Oaks, but that was before she failed at Flemington on Saturday.
The Tony McEvoy-trained runner was the $4.80 favourite to win the Wakeful Stakes, but she sat three wide throughout and only battled to the line.
That run for 12th was enough to see bookmakers let her Oaks odds drift right out to $21. That’s about where she should be in the market and we can’t see her form taking a turn for the better.
Pinot (Best Each Way – $6) – BET NOW
Pinot is a nice up-and-coming type for the Waterhouse/Bott team which could push Aloisia all the way.
The daughter of Pierro only looked fair earlier this season, but her placing behind Anchor Bid at Bendigo three starts back indicated her ability over the longer trips.
She has won both starts since and they have been impressive performances. She won by 3.75 lengths at Flemington before beating the likes of Rimraam in the Ethereal Stakes.
Making her own luck out in front, Pinot looks a shoe-in to see out the Oaks distance and Aloisia might have to do the chasing.
Rimraam (Best Roughie – $15) – BET NOW
Rimraam has drifted from her opening price of $11, but there’s now good place value for punters.
The daughter of Commands has had seven starts for one win and six placings. That’s very good consistency and her recent form has come behind race rivals Pinot and Luvaluva.
Whether she can improve her form to beat them is the question, but she represents good each way value at the price.
Drawing barrier 12 won’t be an issue over this distance and having Kerrin McEvoy in the saddle is a big bonus during the spring carnival.
Hiyaam ($21) – BET NOW
Mick Price lines up the daughter of High Chaparral which is bred to see out the Oaks distance.
She has had five starts for one win and two placings, which included a placing in the Edward Manifold and the Ethereal Stakes.
She had her chance in the Wakeful Stakes last start, but she finished only 1.5 lengths behind the winner and that should be respected.
Having experience at Flemington is a positive and she’s drawn to get a soft run throughout.
Lucky Louie ($101) – BET NOW
Lucky Louie is an unusually-named filly which is still a maiden after nine starts.
Her best finish to date was a sixth in the Ethereal Stakes, which was a good result, but she never emerged in the Wakeful last start.
She might be a stayer in the making, but the breeding suggests otherwise.
Reliable Dame ($17) – BET NOW
There has been some each way interest with Reliable Dame.
The Anthony Freedman-trained filly broke through two starts back at maiden level and her run for fourth in the Geelong Classic against some quality colts and geldings was impressive.
She finished fourth behind Weather with You, which started as one of the favourites for the Victoria Derby.
If that form holds up well, she could be a top four chance.
Sweet Mischief ($61) – BET NOW
Tony McEvoy might be setting the bar too high for Sweet Mischief here.
The moderately-bred filly has failed to impress in four starts to date and if she was training by a country trainer she would be paying triple figures.
Finishing 10 lengths behind Cliff’s Edge last start isn’t going to be good enough to win here.
Four Koalas ($81) – BET NOW
This looks nothing more than a shot in the dark by trainer Brian McGrath.
The Animal Kingdom filly has placed once from seven attempts and her run for eighth in the Moonee Valley Vase wasn’t inspiring.
There was an upset winner last year, but this would take that to new heights.
Circuleight ($151) – BET NOW
Has been around the mark in all five career starts, but they have been mostly at maiden level.
She finished over eight lengths behind Pinot at Flemington three starts ago and she has been unable to exit maiden grades when stepping up in distance since.
The odds look spot on.
Miss Admiration ($201) – BET NOW
All six career runs have been shockers and we’re not sure why she’s in the field.
