The Winterbottom Stakes is the second group one feature of the Ascot carnival and it’s worth a cool $1 million.
Complete with a field full of Australia’s most talented sprinters, it’s often seen as a rivalry between the western and eastern states. This year is no different with the locals cheering on the current favourite State Solicitor, but there are many worth challengers.
We have sorted through the form to find the best bet, each way value and best roughie for the big race this Saturday evening.

Winterbottom Stakes 2017 form guide and tips
Rock Magic ($6) – BET NOW
Rock Magic is an eight-year-old now, but he runs best on this track and he’s going to find this much easier than recent assignments.
The 14-time winner finished sixth in the Darley Classic behind The Everest winner Redzel and that form is top notch for this.
His most recent win came in June when beating Scales of Justice and he has since placed in the Schillaci Stakes behind Super Cash.
He’s worth an each way bet.
Santa Ana Lane ($8.50) – BET NOW
The five-year-old Victorian doesn’t win often, but he’s coming into this with a recent win under his belt.
An entire by Lope de Vega, Santa Ana Lane is a five-time winner which won the Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes at Caulfield last start.
That was easily its best performance to date and it must be respected in Perth. In-form jockey Dean Yendall takes the ride and we wouldn’t be surprised to see this runner figure in the finish.
Durendal ($41) – BET NOW
Chris Gangemi lines up this six-year-old which has yet to win in seven attempts at Ascot, but he went close behind State Solicitor last start.
A six-time winner at this distance, Durendal will likely need to improve slightly to figure in the finish at long odds, but he does have upset potential.
Dream Lifter ($41) – BET NOW
Dream Lifter has run some solid races during his career, but this would be the acid test so far.
The eight-year-old finished third in the Prince of Wales Stakes last start behind Dainty Tess, but his performance prior to that in the Roma Cup was horrible.
There appear to be much better chances in this at longer odds.
Malibu Style (Best Roughie – $34) – BET NOW
Neville Parnham lines up Malibu Style which represents good place value.
The six-year-old is a three-time winner at Ascot and he comes into this having performed well in Melbourne against tough opposition.
He finished third in the Gilgai Stakes before running behind Rich Charm twice to close the carnival. His most recent showing wasn’t inspiring, but he doesn’t deserve to be at such long odds here.
$7 to place is a good play.
The River – scratched
Profit Street ($21) – BET NOW
Profit Street knows how to win being a nine-time winner and if the State Solicitor form is anything to go by, then he’s a chance.
The son of Viscount finished only .35 lengths behind the favourite last start in the Colonel Reeves Stakes and punters have made a profit following him throughout his career.
He will get a good trip in transit from barrier two and he could dictate the play.
State Solicitor ($3.10) – BET NOW
State Solicitor has had four runs since running sixth in this race last year, winning three of those races entering this.
The Williams-trained five-year-old is a four-time winner on this track and a six-time winner at this distance. His last win came as the $1.40 favourite, but it wasn’t as convincing as many punters had predicted.
There’s no denying his talent and he’s on the way up, but $3.10 is far too short for our liking against a hot field.
Viddora (Best Bet – $4.20) – BET NOW
A revelation this campaign, Viddora has been knocking on the door of a group one win after two close-up defeats.
The Lloyd Kennewell-trained mare flashed home in the Group 1 Moir Stakes at Moonee Valley for second, which was taken out by She Will Reign – which would be odds-on to win this.
She then scorched home in the Manikato Stakes behind Hey Doc and this is easier than both of those group one races.
Drawing barrier seven should allow her to find her feet and save up her energy for one big run at them late.
She looks the better bet here.
Whispering Brook ($14) – BET NOW
A winner of five from 15 starts, Whispering Brook has plenty of upside and she’s another which wasn’t far off State Solicitor last start.
The four-year-old by Hinchinbrook hasn’t won this preparation which is the concern, but she drops in weight to 56.5kg and that could make a difference.
Watch for any market moves on the day.
Dainty Tess ($18) – BET NOW
A winner of 10 from 27 starts, Dainty Tess is a consistent type which had excuses last time out behind the favourite.
The four-year-old returned with an elevated heart rate and still finished fifth in the Colonel Reeve Stakes. That run followed a narrow victory in the Prince of Wales Stakes and the seven-time winner at Ascot looks well placed.
Drawn to get all favours so don’t discount here.
Fuhryk (Best Each Way – $10) – BET NOW
We admit that Fuhryk isn’t the most consistent horse, but she will be tough to beat if she’s feeling right here.
The Lindsay Park-trained sprinter won the Alinghi Stakes at Caulfield two starts back and although she battled home in the Maybe Mahal Stakes last start, she likes to mix her form.
She is a five-time winner over this distance and having Damien Oliver in the saddle is only going to help her chances.
Double figure odds should be taken.
Caipirinha ($21) – BET NOW
Having finished a close second behind State Solicitor last start, Caipirinha is entitled to be considered here.
The Nicconi mare ran as a $31 chance last start and those odds have at least been cut for this. That run was a career-best performance from the four-year-old and it could add some value to multiples.
Consider at the each way odds.
