Jack Hermansson vs. Joe Pyfer prediction

The 35-year-old Jack Hermansson has been alternating between wins and losses for the past five years, but still holds the No.11 spot on the rankings as he now gets set to fight up-and-coming Contender Series recruit Joe Pyfer, who has made a strong start to his UFC run courtesy of three stoppage wins in a row.

Hermansson is a crafty veteran with a good set of skills. On the feet he makes the most of his reach as he probes with the jab and calf kick, while also looking to set up either a big counter-strike or swoop in for a takedown. On the mat he has proven to be a skilled grappler and can threaten with both solid submissions effective ground-and-pound. Hermansson has picked up a number of good wins over the course of his career, but struggles to do so consistently and can be troubled by heavy-hitters and more physically strong opponents.

The 27-year-old Pyfer isn’t a flashy striker, but has solid boxing ability with an emphasis on power punches that have so far served him very well, including TKO finishes in four of his last five fights. There’s more to his game than just that though as he’s proven to be a very capable wrestler too and locked in an arm-triangle submission last time out, though admittedly against a pure striker in Abdul Razak Alhassan.

This is certainly a significant step up in competition for Pyfer and Hermansson will be tricky to deal with wherever the action goes. That being said, I do think Hermansson is a bit vulnerable to the kind of hard-hitting offense that Pyfer delivers and so I’m taking the rising contender to find himself in a competitive battle here, but emerge a 2nd round TKO victory.

Prediction: Joe Pyfer to win by TKO in Rd2.

Dan Ige vs. Andre Fili prediction

No.13 ranked featherweight Dan Ige won his first two fights in 2023, but then ended the year with a unanimous decision loss to Bryce Mitchell and now faces Andre Fili, who has also won two of his last three fights, but is currently unranked.

The 32-year-old Ige is a tough, compact striker with good boxing ability at close range, working to the body as well as the head effectively, which also utilizing leg kicks too. He’s not finishing opponents left, right and centre, but nonetheless he does hurt opponents and also benefits from being very durable, having never been stopped inside the distance. Ige will also work in some strategic takedowns into the mix too in order to get the edge over his opponents.

A tall, lanky 145lb’er, the 33-year-old Fili is also an experienced campaigner and will hold a 4″ height and 3″ reach advantage over Ige. Fili is a capable counter-striker who is content to fight at a measured pace with lengthy punches and kicks from range, but can step up a gear when required. He is fairly hittable though and can be hurt these days, so he’s not as durable as his opponent. Like Ige, Fili can also operate on the mat when required, though he’s less likely to seek out takedowns.

Overall I favor Ige here as I think he hits harder, can take more punishment and as such will be able to close distance on Fili and work his combinations while throwing in the occasional takedown to convince the judges he’s a worthy winner.

Prediction: Dan Ige to win by decision.

Brad Tavares vs. Gregory Rodrigues prediction

Brad Tavares was last seen ruthlessly targeting former middleweight champion Chris Weidman’s newly healed broken leg to earn a decision victory last year and end a two-fight losing slump. Now he goes up against Gregory Rodrigues, who suffered a first round KO loss followed by an even quicker KO victory last year.

The 36-year-old Tavares has enjoyed an impressively long stint in the UFC since joining via TUF Season 11 almost 14 years ago, but has never been able to stand out amongst the crowd enough to be considered a star. He’s not the guy to expect an impressive highlight-reel of finishes from, but rather is a dependable, middle-of-the-road style of fighter who makes the most of his efficient boxing with a solid jab, good movement, robust takedown defense and good cardio getting the better of some respectable opposition on the scorecards, but often falling short against the upper echelon of middleweight talent.

The 31-year-old Rodrigues is a physically imposing fighter who likes to fight with ferocious intensity. He’s actually a very skilled grappler and should probably make more use of that than he does. However, Rodrigues has serious power on the feet and loves to focus on that, applying plenty of pressure early in the fight as he looks to either land a big knockout blow or bury his opponents under a barrage of blows. More often than not in the past that’s worked for him, but he’s far from immune to being hit or finished himself by fighters who can match his power and test his questionable chin, or can survive the early onslaught and gain back ground later in the fight.

Tavares’ long-game mentality could potentially see him eek out a win on the scorecards here. However, he doesn’t have the kind of power needed to earn Rodrigues’ respect and I have doubts over his durability at this stage in his career too when going up against someone with Rodrigues’ explosive power, so I’ll take Rodrigues to go in with all-guns-blazing and land a fight-ending blow in the first five minutes.

Prediction: Gregory Rodrigues to win by KO in Rd1.

Michael Johnson vs. Darrius Flowers prediction

Michael Johnson is coming off a KO loss in May of last year and in fact has been defeated in 6 of his last 8 fights. He’ll now take on Contender Series recruit Darrius Flowers, who was submitted in his UFC debut last July.

With a poor overall 13-15 record in the Octagon, yet holding wins over the likes of Dustin Poirier and Edson Barboza earlier in his UFC run, the 37-year-old Johnson is a classic case of a fighter who has failed to make the most of his ability. He’s at the age now where it feels too late for him to turn things around, and being knocked out in his last fight certainly doesn’t help matters. He remains a competent boxer though who moves well and keeps a solid pace, while his offensive wrestling is decent and underutilized. However, he’s always been painfully susceptible to submissions, has become less durable and has an uncanny knack for losing fights he could have won.

With that in mind it feels like the UFC have been fairly kind to Johnson here with their matchmaking as the 29-year-old Flowers is a big step down in competition compared to what the veteran is used to. Like Johnson, Flowers has a weakness to being submitted, but meanwhile though he has power in his punches he doesn’t have good movement and eats a lot of strikes in return.

I’m concerned about Johnson’s chin now, but I feel this could be a winnable fight for him if he just stays mobile and picks his shots carefully to best Flowers in the striking department over three rounds and earn a much-needed decision win.

Prediction: Michael Johnson to win by decision.

Rodolfo Vieira vs. Armen Petrosyan prediction

Rodolfo Vieira has been alternating between wins and losses for the past couple of years and now takes on Arman Petrosyan, who has gone 3-1 in his UFC campaign so far.

This fight was originally scheduled to take place in November, but was pulled on the night of the fight when Vieira took ill backstage. As such my prediction from back then remains the same in this grappler vs striker match-up. The 34-year-old Vieira is a top-tier, highly decorated Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu specialist who has so far won 8 of his 9 career victories in MMA via submission. He’s aided by the fact that he’s quite a capable wrestler too, though his striking is merely functional at best. The red flag for Vieira though has been his gas-tank. He’s a muscled-up middleweight and his poor cardio conservation landed him in big trouble in the second round of his fight with Anthony Hernandez a couple of years, badly running out of steam and then getting tapped out.

On the other hand, Petrosyan is a former kickboxer, though It’s always important to stress he is not the famous champion he shares the same name as. Nevertheless, he’s a very capable striker with a strong kicking game in particular, good output and solid cardio. However, Petrosyan’s ground game is less convincing and his takedown defense in particular is poor.

If Petrosyan can use his striking to deter Vieira’s attempts to get the fight to the mat then he could gain the upperhand later in the fight, but I don’t think he’s got what it takes to stop the Brazilian’s takedowns and that’s going to leave him completely outmatched in the grappling department, leading to Viera’s seizing on a 1st round submission victory.

Prediction: Rodolfo Vieira to win by submission in Rd1.

Robert Bryczek vs. Ihor Potieria prediction

After a series of 1st round victories via strikes on the regional circuit in Europe, Robert Bryczek now makes his UFC debut against Ihor Poteiria, who comes in on a few weeks notice as a late replacement in real need of a win after going 1-3 in the promotion so far.

The 33-year-old Bryczek is entertaining to watch with his aggressive, heavy-handed striking on the feet and indeed via ground-and-pound on the mat too if required.  It’s a style that’s been working well for him for the most part, with no one getting out of the first round against him in the past couple of years, including ex-Bellator and PFL journeyman Lee Chadwick. However, that kind of unrefined, brute-force gameplan could well run him into trouble before long in the UFC.

The 27-year-old Potieria may well be susceptible to this approach however as his chin is very much under question now as all three of his losses in in the past couple of years have come via strikes.  It’s also worth noting his only win during that period saw him send a completely shot version of Mauricio ‘Shogun’ Rua into a long overdue retirement. Like Bryczek, Potieria is a blood-and-guts striker who is capable on the attack in aggressive flurries, but his lack of solid defense means he eats at least as many strikes as he dishes out. He can also work for submissions on the mat, but will struggle to get the fight there in the first place.

It’s likely these two will clash head on from the opening bell and with Potieria’s dubious defense and durability I think that gifts Bryczek a great opportunity to mark his debut with a first round KO victory.

Prediction: Robert Bryczek to win by KO in Rd1.
