Tokyo Olympics Men’s Handball Predictions

Handball is one of those sports we only pay attention to when the Olympics comes around, but it’s a big sport in Europe.

We have been following the form of the best men’s teams over the last few months in preparation of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Denmark is the current favourite with bookmakers, but the likes of Spain, Norway and France are well-favoured to win.

We look at the best gold, silver and bronze medal chances.

Men’s Handball Predictions

To Win Gold – Denmark

Denmark has long been one of the best handball teams in the world and that was proven by its win in the World Handball Championship in January.

They got the better of the likes of Sweden, Spain and France over the concluding rounds to win their second World title. The best player was awarded to Denmark’s Mikkel Hansen, who will likely be in fine scoring form at the Olympics.

Denmark is also the defending Olympic champion after winning six of their eight games in 2016. They scored 230 goals throughout the tournament, which was 84 more than they scored at the 2012 Games in London.

After being a team that failed to qualify from 1988-2004, the improvement of Denmark has been incredible. They’re now the testing material on the world stage and they have won the last two World Championships for good measure.

Punters get $3.50 for Denmark to win gold, which is incredible value for a team that has won the last three major international tournaments.

To Win Silver – France

France is an underrated team that scored back-to-back Olympic wins in 2008 and 2012. They also won the silver medal in Rio, so there is plenty of value with the French.

They have been in good form over the last few years, which included a third placing in the 2019 Worlds and a fourth place at the 2021 Worlds. Despite not winning since 2017, France is a team that can never be overlooked.

They haven’t been playing handball for very long as a country and already they have two Olympic golds and six World Championships.

It’s an impressive record and when you have Michael Guigou in the team, anything is possible. Guigou has scored 970 goals in 283 appearances for France and the goal scoring freak should score plenty of goals in Tokyo.

He is joined by the experienced Luc Abalo, who owns 805 goals and rising stars Nedim Remelli (216 goals) and Valentin Porte (313 goals).

France is paying $5.50 to win silver and $3 to win silver or gold, which is the safer option. Punters should leave France off their handball tickets.

To Win Bronze – Spain

Spain has yet to win a gold medal at the Olympics, but it has won three bronze medals and that’s where we think it will finish.

It comes off a third placing at the World Championships in January where they won seven of nine games, so Spain is a main threat to the likes of Norway and France.

Suprisingly, they failed to qualify for the Olympics in 2016, but they finished third in Beijing, which is a better form guide for punters.

Defence is a key attribute for the Spanish, but they have players that can score. Julen Aguingalde and Joan Canellas are the leading scorers of this team and there are also some younger stars like Aleix Gomez and Daniel Dujshebaev.

Spain is a team that is good enough to win gold, but given their ability to finish third in recent history, we’re picking them to win the bronze.

$4.25 is available with bookmakers and that’s worth taking.
