Women’s Basketball Australia vs USA Predictions

Australia vs United States Game Prediction

Not having Liz Cambage is catching up with Australia, but the Opals are a fighting chance of pulling off an all-time upset on Wednesday.

It hasn’t been the best Olympic campaign for the Opals, who lost to Belgium 85-70 in the opening game before losing to China 76-74 in a thrilling affair.

Needing a win against Puerto Rico, the Opals produced the goods and scored a 27-point victory. The level of opposition wasn’t overly impressive, but it should give them some confidence heading into the do-or-die quarterfinals.

Team USA is 3-0, but they haven’t been playing up to their usual level. They defeated Nigeria 81-72 in the first-round match before dispatching Japan by 17 points. However, in years gone by the United States would have put 30-40 points on the Japanese.

Despite having a wealth of WNBA talent, they snuck past France 93-82 to qualify top of their group. It wasn’t a convincing win, but the increased level of offence was good to see. Team USA had scored totals of 81 and 86 points in their first two games, so scoring 93 was an offensive boost.

Going in Australia’s favour is its recent exhibition win over the USA. The 70-67 win was Australia’s first win over the United States and it might have rocked the confidence levels of the defending Olympic Games champions.

Bookmakers have Australia as $8.50 underdogs, so they’re not expected to win. There isn’t much value backing Team USA at a shortening quote of $1.04, but there will be much more interest in points spread betting markets.

The line is currently set at 15.5 points, which is tough to cover in a quarterfinal. However, we think this will be a statement game for the United States and they could flex their muscles against a weakened Opals outfit.

Most of the money has come for Australia at that line, so it could shift to around 14.5 points, but we’re confident late money will come for Team USA on game day.

Australia vs United States Exotic Bets

The total points line is set at 160 points and we think the total goes under. The United States should score around 85 points and we don’t think the Opals are going to score over 75 points.

Punters get $1.83 for both options, but we’re confident the Under 160 will cash and we’ll see a low-scoring contest.

We also think the United States will come out firing and first quarter markets is where punters can find quick value. Team USA is currently the –4.5 favourite in the first quarter and we think they can establish a healthy lead from the start. $1.90 is well worth taking and it only takes 10 minutes for punters to cash.

There is also a favourable halftime line of 7.5. Team USA has the ability to pile on the points quickly and we don’t see Australia sticking with them at the half.
