Tokyo Olympics Women’s Basketball Predictions

Women’s basketball isn’t one of the headline events at the Olympics, but we have found excellent value with betting markets.

The United States are overwhelming favourites to take home the gold, but Australia is hot on their heels after beating the US in a recent friendly.

United States are $1.05, but bookmakers have a wealth of betting markets and we identify to best value betting markets for the Olympic Women’s basketball competition.

Women’s Basketball Predictions

To Win Silver or Gold – Australia

We’re not going to take $1.05 for United States to win gold. There is no value in those odds, and although they are the best team in the world, there could be an upset brewing.

Australia shouldn’t be overlooked as a gold or silver chance, especially after their win over United States. They turned around a 13-point halftime deficit to win 70-67, which was the first time Australia has beaten the US Women’s team since 2010.

It might only have been an exhibition game, but the US shot poorly from the three-point line and Australia was able to capitalise. Seattle Storm forward Ezi Magbegor led the Australians with 17 points and Rebecca Allen had 11 points, five boards and two blocks.

The Opals could have easily crumbled under the pressure of being down by double-digits at the half. However, they played well in the second half and it came without their star player Liz Cambage, who will miss the games to focus on her mental health.

Even without Cambage, Australia is in a medal-winning position at the Olympics. They are the second-best team in the world and punters get value odds for the Opals to win gold or silver.

We think Australia is an excellent chance to make the final. Beating the US in the final won’t be easy, but punters get $3.30 for Australia to win gold or silver, which is good insurance money.

There is also an option for Australia to win a medal, which includes bronze. This pays $1.83, which is also excellent value for the Opals.

To Win a Medal – Canada

Canada has yet to win a medal in the Women’s basketball competition at the Olympics, but this could be their best chance to get some hardware.

They are ranked fourth in the world and there is plenty of WNBA talent throughout the team. Named are the likes of Natalie Achonwa, Shay Colley, Kim Gaucher and Kia Nurse.

It’s a strong team and although they could face the US in the semifinals, they’re still a chance to beat either Australia or France in the bronze medal game, shouldn’t everything play out as planned.

Canada deserves a medal in this event and punters get favourable odds of $2.30. They are an improving outfit and they will be confident of bringing back a medal, so they enter our selections at the generous odds.

To Win Bronze – France

It’s always good to have a saver bet if Canada doesn’t come up trumps. It’s hard to know how the tournament will play out regarding Australia and Canada, so taking France to win the bronze is a solid betting strategy.

France won the silver medal at the 2012 Olympic games and they finished fourth in 2020, so they’re always around the mark.

The 2012 campaign featured seven wins and only one loss, which came in the final to United States. 2016 featured four wins and four losses, so they will need to improve on those results to take home a medal.

However, the fifth-ranked team is an accomplished EuroBasket outfit and that form should take them close in Tokyo.

Bookmakers are offering $4.75 for France to win bronze, which is worth taking. They are capable of making the semifinals where they will likely lose to Australia or United States before facing off against either Canada or potentially Serbia for the bronze.
