2020 Champions League Semi Finals – Preview, Expert Betting Tips & Odds

Only 4 teams remain in Europe’s premiere club competition as the Champions League semi-finals have been set. Pre-tournament favourites Manchester City and Barcelona were just two of the big names to fall at the last hurdle, with the semi-final line up looking distinctively fresh this season. German giants Bayern Munich produced one of the all-time great performances to oust Barcelona 8-2 in the quarter finals and they will take on a Lyon side that were clinical in beating Manchester City. In the other semi-final two of Europe’s richest sides face off as Paris Saint Germain (who produced a stunning comeback to beat Atalanta) take on RB Leipzig – a side that only formed 10 years ago and upset the odds to beat Atletico Madrid last time out.

It promises to be a fascinating week of football – with the opportunity to become European Club Champions on offer – the stakes do not come any bigger.

Here are our picks for the semi-finals of the 2019/20 Champions League

Champions League Semi Finals Betting Tips

PSG vs RB Leipzig

PSG ($1.85)

RB Leipzig ($3)

Draw ($3.1)

Unchartered territory is the name of the game for both PSG and RB Leipzig as they play in their first Champions League semi-finals. Both sides have received significant financial investment in recent seasons and European glory will have been the ultimate target for all associated with the respective clubs.

PSG have long been dubbed as European Champions elect without managing to quite get over the finish line. They endured a tough group in the Champions League this season but outlasted Real Madrid, Club Brugge and Galatasaray to finish unbeaten from their opening six fixtures. Prior to the COVID 19 hiatus, they then managed to edge out much fancied Borussia Dortmund over two legs, a result that underlined their credentials this season. Things looked bleak in the last 8 however as they trailed Atalanta 1-0 in the 90th minute but injury time goals from Marquinhos and Eric Chupo-Moting sealed an incredible turnaround. With the likes of Neymar, Kyllian Mbappe and Mauro Icardi in their ranks, the French club are chasing history having won all three titles in France this year and they look well placed to challenge for European glory too.

Few sides are as decisive in German football as RB Leipzig. A country known for organically breeding footballing talent is in danger of being usurped by European football’s great ‘pretenders. The sky has been the limit for RB Leipzig as they have climbed the German and now European footballing ladder and they look more than comfortable at this level. The odds looked stacked against RB Leipzig in a tough group, but they finished top above Lyon, Zenit St Petersburg, and Benfica to book their place in the last 16. A competent dismantling of Tottenham prior to lockdown was followed up by a gutsy 2-1 win over Atletico Madrid in the quarter finals. Some of Europe’s brightest footballing talents ply their trade with Leipzig and the likes of Dani Olmo, Marcel Sabitzer and Dayot Upamecano will all be looking to showcase their skills on the biggest stage once more.

This should be a fascinating encounter between two excellent footballing sides. PSG look to move the ball quickly with the likes of Mbappe and Neymar quick to turn defences around and run in behind. RB Leipzig meanwhile, are a very well drilled outfit and the longer they can stay in the game, the more they will feel they have a chance of nicking it.

As always in knockout football, it could come down to a mistake or flash of brilliance that settles the game. With more match winners in their side, PSG are justified favourites and should reach their maiden Champions League final.

Lyon vs Bayern Munich

Lyon ($11)

Bayern Munich ($1.3)

Draw ($5)

It’s France vs Germany once more in the second semi-final as Lyon take on Bayern Munich. For Lyon, their fairy tale run continues, and they are proving to be a handful for every side they come up against whilst the Bayern Munich juggernaut just continues to blitz all before them.

Despite not reaching the heights of the early 2000’s, Lyon have been one of the most consistent sides in European football over the past couple of decades. The current cohort of players at their disposal look very well drilled and their pace in forward areas is unrivalled across the continent. Having only just made it through the group stages – finishing second behind RB Leipzig, they looked to have their work cut out against Juventus. The French side held strong over two legs however to progress via the away goals rule. Perhaps their most impressive result was the 3-1 dismantling of Manchester City in the last 8. Few gave Lyon a sniff against the in-form City side, but they rode their luck and took their chances to reach the last 4. Led by Memphis Depay in forward areas and with the pace of Maxime Cornet and trickery of Houssem Aouar they have plenty of fire power and are capable of beating anyone on their day.

When it comes to European experience and knowhow, few sides can compete with Bayern Munich. The German Champions have won the Champions League (European Cup) on 5 occasions and have one of the best records in the competition. Drawn against Tottenham, Olympiacos and Red Star Belgrade in the group stages, Bayern blitzed all before them, winning every game on their way to the last 16. They were equally as impressive against Chelsea, winning 7-1 on aggregate against the English side to reach the quarter finals. In the last 8, they produced a quite incredible performance to demolish Barcelona 8-2, in one of the all-time European victories to reach the last 4. Robert Lewandowski is one of Europe’s deadliest strikers whilst the likes of Serge Gnabry, Thomas Muller and Kingley Coman all provide devastating attacking flair. They are the odds-on favourites to win the competition but know they will need to be at their best here against a dangerous Lyon side.

Whilst Bayern Munich are the justified favourites for the match and the subsequent competition, Lyon are more than capable of hurting them on the break. Bayern’s efficiency in all areas will allow them to create plenty of chances against a Lyon defence that does leak goals but if they don’t take them, Lyon will be looking to counter attack and pick them off.

This could be a very open game, with Bayern looking to assert their style and Lyon hoping to catch them on the break. And although Lyon will be in the game, Bayern Munich should prevail unscathed from this one.
