Introduction to Sportsbet
Established in 1993 and having over 25 years experience in the Australian market, Sportsbet have expanded their brand to become Australia’s most recognisable online bookmaker.
In 2005, Matthew Trip (who went on to start BetEzy, which became BetEasy, which became CrownBet, then went back to BetEasy), purchased Sportbet for $250,000 who was at the time a very small Darwin-based bookmaker.
The company thrived during the online betting boom at the time, when regular face-to-face bookmakers (TAB) started to decline in popularity.
Sportsbet’s weight in the online betting industry was further boosted back in 2009 when giant Irish bookmaker Paddy Power agreed upon a 51% acquisition package said to be worth around $200 million.
In 2011, Paddy Power purchased the remaining stake in Sportbet to take full ownership, with the final sale price totaling somewhere around $338 million.
Today, Sportbet continues to be one of Australia’s best online bookmakers.
Let’s take a look at what makes Sportsbet our number one rated bookmaker:
Sportsbet customer service
The first port of call for help will be a click through to Sportsbet’s great help section. There, frequently asked questions can be browsed through, covering all topics from website operation, bet placement and questions over your account itself. Email and telephone contact is also available and if you need immediate help, you can engage in a live chat with a customer service representative on the website.
Live chat is the method that we recommend because it is quick and easy and your problems can usually be resolved in a matter of minutes.
Sportsbet website design
The homepage layout of Sportsbet.com.au is excellent, with all of your betting options being operated by a left-hand side menu, starting with Quick Links to get to current events and live betting.
Horse racing takes a precedence as well with its own menu section featuring the days upcoming races as well as racing events in the next couple of days.
Sports betting events have their own sections and are easy to navigate by sport, leagues, and events. A click on any sports section from the menu brings up the featured betting markets, as well as future events on that sport in particular.
All in all, navigation is easily accessible no matter where you are on the site – for example, if you are browsing Melbourne Cup horse racing markets, you can easily navigate to any sport within a click or two.
While Sportsbet cover a huge range of sports and racing, they are truly in a league of there own when it comes to the volume of markets available for each event. The odds themselves are presented very clearly on the site and a click on a selected price will send it straight to the betting slip.
The bet slip is always accessible on the right-hand side which allows punters to see their potential return, as well as to quickly build multi bets from their selections.
Other highlight features across the website are live in play betting as well as live streams on racing and NBA being provided to customers who have deposited funds.
Sportsbet mobile app
If you are looking to enjoy Sportsbet.com.au on the go, then they have superb mobile betting apps for iPhone and Android, too.
From first use, it becomes apparent that Sportsbet has put in significant time and effort into perfecting their iPhone and Android apps, and you will not be disappointed with the experience.
Both apps are extremely fast and navigating racing and sports markets is a breeze and your betting slip is quickly available on any page via the yellow button in the top, right-hand corner.
It is for the all-round betting experience on mobile and desktop that Sportsbet.com.au is rated by GoBet as the #1 bookmaker in the country, with BetEasy coming in a close second, and Neds coming in third.
Sportsbet adverting and YouTube
Sportsbet have long been known for their ads that push the limits with some of their most successful campaigns being taken off air shortly after airing.
One of the more recent and more famous cases was when they hired ex-Olympian and suspended drug cheat, Ben Johnson, to promote the release of the Android mobile app (which is a fantastic app, by the way) – Ben was “putting the Roid in Android”.
The ad was deemed to have made light of drug use and was ordered off air.
We can’t speak for all Australian punters, but here at GoBet, we loved the ad campaign and think that Australia should go back to being a country that loves a good joke!
