We have expert betting tips for Super Rugby Aotearoa Round 2, which kicks off on Friday night.
Punters were delighted to see the start of the competition last week and Round 2 promises to be just as enthralling.
On the card this week is Chiefs vs. Highlanders and Crusaders vs. Hurricanes. Value is available with bookmakers and we look at the best bets for both games.
Super Rugby Aotearoa Round 2 Predictions
5:05pm Chiefs vs. Highlanders @ FMG Stadium
The Chiefs kick off their 2021 Super Rugby Aotearoa campaign against the Highlanders and they are favoured to win.
The Waikato-based franchise is one of the best attacking teams in the competition and that’s why bookmakers have opened them as the $1.64 favourites.
With the likes of Sam Cane, Anton Lienert-Brown, Bred Weber and a stacked back line, the Chiefs should be in for a good season.
Facing the Highlanders won’t be an easy task first-up. They are coming off a 26-13 loss to the Crusaders, but after trailing 14-0 early, they fought back to be only one point behind with 20 minutes to go.
Despite the loss, the Highlanders didn’t lose any admirers. They will be battle-hardened and better for the experience.
The Chiefs will need to fire from the outset because if they don’t, the Highlanders could pile on the points early. We’re expecting the Highlanders to come out strong with the game under their belt.
Punters get plenty of value with the Highlanders at $2.32. The Chiefs are a dangerous team, but there is little value with the $1.64 head-to-head price.
It will upset the home fans on Friday night in Hamilton, but we’re going with the Highlanders to score an upset Round 2 win.
Betting tip: Highlanders to win @ $2.32 – Bet @ Sportsbet
2:35pm Crusaders vs. Hurricanes @ Orangetheory Stadium
The Crusaders kicked off their defense of the Super Rugby title with a 26-13 win over the Highlanders last Friday night.
It wasn’t the best performance we’ve ever seen from the Crusaders. They led by only one point with around 20 minutes to go, but two late tries were enough to push them past the Highlanders.
Yellow cards didn’t help their cause but the All Black-quality forward pack was dominant in the second half. It was the difference in the game and the same could be on the cards against the Hurricanes.
The Hurricanes suffered a 31-16 loss to the Blues last week and there are some concerns. They had a chance to win the game but ill-discipline and poor finishing was their undoing.
The Wellington-based franchise has enough pieces to push teams close this season, but the forward pack was being dominated by the Blues. It won’t be any easier against the Crusaders, which boasts the best forward pack in New Zealand.
We are expecting an open contest on Friday where free-running rugby should be on display. That plays into the Hurricanes’ hands, but beating this classy Crusaders outfit is not easy.
They are good enough to finish the 2021 Super Rugby season unbeaten and starting 2-0 would be a fantastic start.
Bookmakers have the Crusaders as $1.22 favourites and that was expected. The current line is 12.5, which seems high, but the Crusaders are a covering machine.
Take the Crusaders –12.5 in a game that could be close at the half, but expect the locals to pull away in the second half.
Betting tip: Crusaders –12.5 @ $1.90 – Bet @ Sportsbet
