Punters get value odds with bookmakers, so let’s dive into the game previews.
Super Rugby Aotearoa Round 3 Predictions
5:05pm Crusaders vs Chiefs @ Orangetheory Stadium
The Crusaders have made a positive start to the defense of their Super Rugby NZ title. They scored a Round 1 win against the Highlanders before beating the Hurricanes last week.
Despite being 6-0 behind against the Hurricanes last week, the Crusaders hit top gear about 20 minutes into the game. They scored three quick tries when the Hurricanes had a man in the bin and they never looked back.
The 33-16 victory sent a message to the other Super Rugby teams, which haven’t been on the same level as the Crusaders. That especially applies to the Chiefs, who were beaten as home favourites in their first game of the season.
The Chiefs suffered a 39-23 loss to the Highlanders at FMG Stadium in Hamilton, so they will be looking to perform better in Round 3.
The Waikato-based franchise is capable of producing the goods and perhaps they were rusty in their opening game. Whatever the case, beating the Crusaders in front of a big crowd in Christchurch on Saturday won’t be easy.
Bookmakers have the Crusaders as $1.14 favourites and –15.5 in line betting. That is a sizable spread for the Crusaders to cover and we think the Chiefs will keep this game close.
They will need to be terrific on defense and take their chances. However, with a game under their belt, the Chiefs aren’t 16 points worse than the Crusaders.
Betting tip: Chiefs +15.5 @ $1.90 – Bet @ Sportsbet

1:35pm Blues vs Highlanders @ Eden Park
It was hard not to be impressed with the Highlanders’ win over the Chiefs last week. The 39-23 performance was an offensive explosion from a team that used to struggle to score tries.
The Highlanders put away a dangerous team with ease, but they’ll need to be even better against the Blues in Auckland this Sunday.
Coming off a Round 1 win over the Hurricanes, the Blues are the biggest threat to the Crusaders this season. The 31-16 win was built on strong defense and the Highlanders could find it tough to penetrate.
The Blues have a talented roster, including Rieko Ioane, who can use his electric speed to get around any defender. He is just one of the many All Blacks in the Blues side, so they will be tough to beat.
Playing at Eden Park is a massive boost for the Blues, who always play better at home. Coming off a road win is a good sign and having had a week to prepare isn’t the worst thing in the world.
Bookmakers have 5.5 points between these teams, which is where we framed the market. There isn’t much between the Blues and Highlanders, but we give the edge to the Blues.
They boast a physical and talented team that should be able to handle the Highlanders. Expect the Blues to come out firing from the opening whistle and control the game throughout.
Punters could take the $1.37 and include the Blues in Super Rugby multis, or take the –5.5 for a risker, but a more value option.
Betting tip: Blues –5.5 @ $1.90 – Bet @ Sportsbet
