We have expert betting tips for Super Rugby Aotearoa Round 8, which kicks off on Friday night.
Rugby continues in New Zealand with the Highlanders vs Blues on Friday and Chiefs vs Crusaders on Saturday night.
The competition has been given a shake up with the Crusaders losing to the Highlanders and only narrowly winning last week, so it’s all on across the Tasman.
Super Rugby Aotearoa Round 8 Predictions
5:05pm Highlanders vs Blues @ Forsyth Barr Stadium
The Highlanders scored a win over the Crusaders in Round 6, but the high didn’t last long. They followed it up with a 26-23 loss to the Chiefs at home, so this is an important game.
Losing at home has become all too familiar for the Highlanders this season. They need to start producing the goods in front of a booming crowd at Forsyth Barr, but beating the Blues won’t be easy.
The Auckland-based franchise hasn’t lived up to expectations in 2021 with three wins and two losses, but they were impressive beating the Hurricanes in Round 6.
It was a much-needed win for the Blues and having had a bye last week is ideal preparation for the Highlanders. The home side has had three tough games in a row, so fatigue will likely set in throughout this game.
The Blues are the $1.47 favourites to win on Friday night, which isn’t unexpected. They are the better team and although costly for punters this season, they still have time to figure things out.
They are a team capable of blowing the opposition off the field and with the line set at –5.5, that gives punters a generous line to work with. We expect the Blues to win by more than an unconverted try, so take the line before it moves on game day.
It could shift to –7.5, which makes a huge difference for punters.
Betting tip: Blues –5.5 @ $1.90 – Bet @ Sportsbet
5:05pm Chiefs vs Crusaders @ FMG Stadium
It was joy for the Chiefs last week when beating the Highlanders in dramatic fashion at Forsyth Barr Stadium in Dunedin.
The three-point victory keeps the Chiefs in the hunt with three wins from five games and just two points behind the Blues.
Despite having a –26 points differential, the Chiefs have managed to stay competitive in Super Rugby. They are slowly warming up at the right time, but Saturday’s game against the Crusaders is the ultimate test.
In saying that, there is no better situation to face the Crusaders than now. They lost to the Highlanders in Round 6 before only narrowly beating the Hurricanes in a torrid affair last week.
The All Black players haven’t been clicking as well as they were earlier this season. Richie Mo’unga had an off game last week and there are concerns of peaking too early.
The Crusaders are certainly there for the taking but they are a quality outfit. Punters have made the mistake of underrating this team in the past and it often ends in bad news.
We are surprised by the betting lines this week. Bookmakers are giving the Chiefs plenty of respect at $2.80 and with the line at 5.5, bookies expect a close game.
There won’t be much between the Chiefs and Crusaders on Saturday, but we can’t look past the Crusaders –5.5. It’s a luxury line that you don’t often see in Super Rugby Aotearoa, so we’ll grab it with both hands.
Betting tip: Crusaders –5.5 @ $1.90 – Bet @ Sportsbet
