Super Rugby Aotearoa Round 9 Predictions
5:05pm Chiefs vs Hurricanes @ FMG Stadium
We can’t wait for this one as the hugely-improved Chiefs look to hold strong against the dangerous Hurricanes on Friday.
The Chiefs have made their way to second on the ladder behind the Crusaders after notching a 26-25 comeback win over the Crusaders last week.
Despite being behind the scoreboard at halftime, the quality of the Chiefs come through in the second half. It was a stunning comeback win for the Chiefs, which has improved with every game in 2021.
The Hurricanes come off a bye, so they will be well-rested. Their most recent game was a 30-27 loss to the Crusaders, but they did well considering the number of yellow cards handed out.
It has been a frustrating season for the Canes, who sit at the bottom of the ladder with only one win from six games. It’s not where we thought they would be, especially given their All Black talent in the squad.
However, we’re not sure their fortunes will change. The Chiefs are playing better than any other Super Rugby team and playing at FMG Stadium is a bonus. It’s a sold-out crowd and that could be enough to get them over the line.
Bookmakers have the Chiefs as –6.5 favourites, so winning by converted try is all that’s needed. We think the Chiefs can get a sizable lead at the half and hold off the charge of the Hurricanes.
Chase Tiatia is a player who could score an overdue try for the Chiefs. The Bay of Plenty representative is a powerful runner and he could benefit from a pass from Damian McKenzie. Tiatia pays $2.63 to score in what should be a free-flowing contest.
Betting tip: Chiefs –6.5 @ $1.90 – Bet @ Sportsbet
5:05pm Crusaders vs Blues @ Orangetheory Stadium
After looking unbeatable for the first four rounds, the Crusaders have come back to earth with a loud thud.
The Crusaders were beaten by the Highlanders three weeks ago when the Highlanders had several players suspended. They rebounded with a win over the Hurricanes, which was only a three-point victory.
They then lost to the Chiefs last week after holding a solid halftime lead, so something needs to change for the Crusaders against a dangerous Blues outfit.
The Blues have had a disappointing season at 3-3. They are currently third behind the Crusaders and Chiefs, but a win on Saturday could see them take the second spot.
The Auckland-based franchise lost to the Highlanders last week and they had a chance to win it late. They have struggled to live up to expectations and a Super Rugby title could be slipping by the Blues this season.
With this game being played in Christchurch, it should give the Crusaders incentive to produce a huge performance. They are still the best team in the competition and getting back on home soil should help.
The current line is 6.5 and we think the Crusaders can win by 10. The Blues should be in for the fight, but class will shine through and Crusaders will solidly their spot at the top of the ladder.
Betting tip: Crusaders –6.5 @ $1.90 – Bet @ Sportsbet
