Friday 14/6/19

5:35pm Highlanders vs. Waratahs @ Forsyth Barr Stadium

The Highlanders play their second consecutive home game on Friday night and they’re hoping to play better than last week.

Coming off a 24-24 draw against the Bulls, the Highlanders can save face by beating the Waratahs this week. The ‘Tahs were beaten last week to the Brumbies, ultimately hurting their playoff chances.

Bookmakers have the Highlanders as firm $1.08 favourites for this game, but can they cover the 20.5 points spread?

We’re not sure they will.

7:45pm Rebels vs. Chiefs @ Melbourne Rectangular Stadium

That was a simply awful display of rugby played by the Rebels against the Crusaders last week. The 66-0 drubbing isn’t what the Rebels needed before this pivotal game against the Chiefs.

The Chiefs enjoyed a week off having beaten those same Crusaders 40-27 in Fiji and they’re not a team to mess with when they have confidence.

We’re a little surprised to see the Chiefs as underdogs for this game, but we’ll happily take them to inflict more pain on the Rebels.

Saturday 15/6/19

8:10am Jaguares vs. Sunwolves @ Estadio Jose Amalfitani

The Jaguares are the form team of the Super Rugby competition right now and they’ll rack up another win here.

Coming off another win over the Sharks last week (34-7), the Jaguares are low-flying their way into the playoffs and could be a dangerous team in weeks to come.

We have little doubt that they’ll beat the Sunwolves, but will they play as hard knowing they have their division locked up?

Momentum is key and we think the Jaguares will play hard.

5:45pm Hurricanes vs. Blues @ Wellington Regional Stadium

The Hurricanes were impressive in beating the Lions in South Africa last week and that form should stack up nicely here.

Blues couldn’t quite do the job against the Reds last week and finishing games off has been their problem all year.

There’s little doubt that the Hurricanes are the better team here and with the line being set at 9.5, we think they’re good enough to cover it.

7:45pm Brumbies vs. Reds @ GIO Stadium

The Brumbies have kicked clear in the Australian conference and the Reds can only spoil the party this Saturday.

Having scored a vital 35-24 win over the Waratahs last week, the Brumbies can’t be caught in their conference and the Reds are playing only for pride.

How that has an effect on this game, we’re not sure, but the Brumbies should look to keep the pedal down against their conference rivals.

The odds on offer for the Brumbies are good, considering they’re the best team in Australia.

11:05pm Stormers vs. Sharks @ Newlands Stadium

This is fourth vs fifth in the South African conference and although there’s not much to play for, it should be an exciting game.

Stormers got the job done last week when putting away the Sunwolves 31-18 but it wasn’t the performance of a team heading in the right direction.

Likewise, for the Sharks, which showed some ability early on against the Jaguares but were soundly beaten 34-7.

They might have given up on this season and the Stormers could take advantage.

Sunday 16/6/19

1:15am Bulls vs. Lions @ Loftus Versfeld

This could be the game of the week as the Bulls sit one point ahead of the Lions in the South African conference standings.

The Bulls remained in contention with a hard-fought draw against the Highlanders last week and only the travel back to South Africa could hurt them here.

Lions stay in South Africa having lost 37-17 to the Hurricanes but they’re a better team than advertised.

This is a tough game to predict but the slight advantage goes to the Bulls, providing they’re not too tired.
