The Australian Open Men’s Final features two players who leave everything on the court every time they play.
Roger Federer is back to claim his second consecutive Australian Open title and he will face Marin Cilic, who is searching for his second grand slam title having won the 2014 U.S. Open.
Bookmakers are clearly going for Roger Federer as most punters predicted, but Cilic has the game to cause Federer some problems and the final might not be as straight forward as many are predicting.
We’ve seen some classic Australian Open finals in Melbourne over the past few years and this could be another.
Roger Federer form and odds
It’s fair to say that Roger Federer has breezed into the final.
The Swiss ace needed to play only one and a half sets against Hyeon Chung in the semi-final to progress, after the South Korean succumb to blisters.
Federer was in complete control after leading 6-1, 4-1 and he looked simply brilliant in the process.
His court coverage was incredible and apart from a couple of wild backhands, Federer had the ball on a rope.
He hasn’t dropped a set throughout the tournament, despite playing the likes of Tomas Berdych and Richard Gasquet. That’s an incredible record and it’s why he’s the most successful tennis player of all time.
Could the play from Cilic give Federer some problems? Cilic has a power-based game plan which can catch some players off guard, especially players like Federer who like to control the tempo of the match.
Cilic did beat Federer in straight sets to win the 2014 U.S. Open, so it can be done and Federer will need to be prepared for the attack coming his way.
Having said that, Federer is in sublime form and he’s the clear favourite and with good reason.
Federer is currently $1.22 with Sportsbet.
Marin Cilic form and odds
We’re not sure if Marin Cilic would have beaten Rafael Nadal had it not been for the Spaniard’s injury, but either way he progressed to the semifinals where he looked mightily impressive.
Facing Brit Kyle Edmund throughout the tournament hadn’t been an easy task for most players, but Cilic dealt to him with consummate ease.
The straight-sets victory was enough to capture the attention of punters and a confident Cilic is a dangerous Cilic.
He has dropped four sets throughout the tournament, with two coming at the hands of Nadal, but he was never in any real danger of losing a match.
The Croatian 29-year-old has played in big matches before and it was only last year when he played Federer in the final at Wimbledon.
Cilic lost 6-3, 6-1, 6-4 on that occasion, but the grass has always been Federer’s preferred surface and the big-hitting Cilic loves the fast courts in Melbourne.
He’s going to need to play four hours of complete tennis, but we think he can at least test Federer on Sunday.
Cilic is currently $4.50 at Sportsbet.
Federer vs. Cilic tip
Roger Federer should win this match, but the $1.22 is a touch short for our liking.
We think Marin Cilic can at least take a set off Federer and the sets betting option is where the value resides.
Federer 3-1 is currently paying $3.60 and that’s worth taking the risk on. We don’t think Cilic could take this to a five-setter, but he could play extremely well in one set and make Federer think twice – BET NOW.
