2024 Australian Open Women’s Semi-Finals Predictions
—
Coco Gauff vs Aryna Sabalenka Prediction
American star Coco Gauff won the 2023 US Open, so she demands plenty of respect against Sabalenka.
She didn’t look as good in her quarterfinal win over Kostyuk, but she battled hard in the third set to pull away and make another grand slam final four.
Gauff has a 4-2 advantage over Sabalenka in their head-to-head matchups, so the $2.82 odds shouldn’t be overlooked on Thursday night.
She’s a mightily tough player, who doesn’t have an explosive shot, but she grinds, much like Novak Djokovic.
Sabalenka seemed relaxed and she cruised to victory in her quarterfinal. She was seen dancing around before the match, and that’s the mindset she needs to compete at the highest level.
Our biggest worry about backing Sabalenka, especially at $1.40 odds, is that she’s prone to choking on the big stage. She has played some shocking matches in semis and finals at the grand slam level, so punters must back her on trust.
We can’t trust her just yet, and we like that the temperament of Gauff is better for winning grand slams, as she has proven.
It’s a battle of power vs class, and on this occasion, we can’t turn down the $2.82 odds for a player we think is better.
Betting tip: Coco Gauff @ $2.82
Dayana Yastremska vs Qinwen Zheng Prediction
Neither player was expected to make the semifinals, although there was some respect for Zheng in Australian Open betting markets.
She was a $12 chance to win the tournament, which is a much shorter price than Yastremska, who wasn’t fancied as the world number 93.
Yastremska hasn’t had the hardest road to the semifinals, which is just the luck of the draw. Her toughest opponent was Viktoria Azarenka, who hasn’t been at her best for years.
However, it has also been an easy road to the semis for Zheng, who hasn’t had to face anyone of note, which puts the depth of the women’s field into question.
However, it appears as though Zheng should have the upper hand. Her serve is solid, and she’s much higher ranked than Yastremska.
Rankings aren’t everything, but the $1.42 favourite is riding the wave of momentum, and she could breeze through this semifinal.
$1.42 is too short, so take Zheng to win in straight sets. It pays $2.25, which is a fair price from bookmakers for the Chinese rising star.
We expect money to come for the favourite leading up to the fight, so even including Zheng at $1.42 in tennis multis is a good betting strategy.
Betting tip: Qinwen Zheng 2-0 @ $2.25
