Australian Cup Form Guide & Tips
(1) Zipping Hopkins ($16.00)
His form has been solid throughout this preparation but it would take a career-best performance to beat this star-studded field.
(2) Canya All Class ($5.00)
He adds much depth to this field after winning two back and placing behind Excavation last time out.
There are many superstars in this field, and a lot depends on the start. He often gets back in the run before making ground late, so while he needs luck, class is on his side.
(3) Vincent Bale ($5.50)
Another high-quality runner with Group form, and he comes off an eight-length heat win against Zipping Hopkins.
That might not have been the strongest field, but he won commandingly, and it’s tough to leave him out of our picks at the each-way odds.
(4) Mepunga Tully (Best Bet – $3.70)
We’re putting her on top because she was a scorching time to qualify, and she hits the ground running. That could be the winning of the race for the favourite on Saturday.
The two-year-old daughter of Fernando Bale owns five wins from nine starts at the track and distance, so the statistics stack up well.
She is the quickest dog in the field and she could prove it.
(5) Excavation ($4.50)
He got back to his brilliant best last start, and his best is clearly good enough to handle this field. However, we can’t include the entire field in our picks, so we’re taking the risk and leaving out Excavation from trifecta picks.
He’s still in the mix for the first four, but he could get squeezed early with Mepunga Tully likely to go forward and room could be tight.
(6) Deadly Avenger (Best Roughie – $10.00)
Worth a play at the double-figure odds following a second placing behind Tim Zoo, which we believe is a good form guide.
His best time at The Meadows is quick enough to figure in the finish and being on the outside of pace runners could be vital.
(7) Flying Zulu ($9.00)
Flying Zulu would have been paying $4 had he drawn the rails, but he’s not a huge fan of coursing wide.
He could ping the lids and attempt to cross the field, and if he’s unable to get around them, it could spell disaster.
With so much pace on his inside, we’re opting to leave him out, purely based on circumstances from the draw.
(8) Tim Zoo (Best Each Way – $8.00)
One runner that loves a wide trap is Tim Zoo, who defeated Deadly Avenger by a length from trap eight last start.
He has regained his confidence with five consecutive wins, and we’re more than happy to include him in our picks at a generous price.
(9) Smooth Plane ($8.00)
He is a decent chance should he get a run. It would depend on his draw, but we can’t see any runner being scratched.
(10) Amron Tiger ($26.00)
Unlikely to be quick enough to handle this stellar field.
